Making Data Useful: User-centric Approaches to Data

Making Data Useful: User-centric Approaches to Data | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

We are swimming in data. Every minute, YouTube sees two days' worth of video uploaded, Tumblr sees about 25,000 blog posts, and there are 2,000 check-ins to Foursquare. Yet most uses of data—big or small, point or range, stream or batch—are undertaken by organizations for organizations. Degrowth 2014 - Michel Bauwens on The Transition to a Sustainable Commons Society - YouTube

Degrowth will only be possible by changing the artificial scarcity-based design practices and engineering of the for-profit sector and by removing the incentive to externalize the true production costs in terms of matter and energy. A commons-oriented approach should combine global open design based in communities, local on-demand distributed manufacturing, and the use of renewable distributed energy. Along with changes in governance and ownership, it can contribute to a global phase transition.

How Uber's Efforts to Squeeze Drivers Have Compelled Them to Fight Back

How Uber's Efforts to Squeeze Drivers Have Compelled Them to Fight Back | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Last week in Long Island City, a waterfront neighborhood in western Queens, over 1,000 Uber drivers went on strike, protesting against  several recent policy changes that directly cut into their wages. LIC is cab country, home to countless car service companies, and it can sometimes feel like every passing vehicle is a taxi of some sort: a classic yellow cab, a town car, a green taxi or, more likely than not, a ridesharing car. So it came as no surprise that drivers who work for Uber—a smartphone app that connects drivers with people looking for a ride—chose the company’s Long Island City headquarters to protest their labor practices.

The joys of a repair cafe: Mad Max with a KitKat and a nice cup of tea | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

What is a repair cafe? It’s exactly what it says on the tin; it’s a place where you can go, with your broken items, to consult people more knowledgeable than you about how to fix them. Oh, and have a cup of tea and a cake while doing so. The world’s first repair cafe appeared in Amsterdam in 2009, set up by Martine Postma. Now, there are around 400, from Australia to the US, with more being registered each day
