Bradley Manning's Sentence, David Miranda's Detention: Two Scandals

Bradley Manning's Sentence, David Miranda's Detention: Two Scandals | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Manning’s officers kept him on a job involving intelligence reports even though he’d sent one of them a picture of himself dressed as a woman and had been found on the floor of his office with a knife. One of them testified that he was just really short-staffed. Manning, at his sentencing hearing, apologized for any harm he had done, and said that he was ready to pay a price: “I did not fully appreciate the broader effects of my actions. Those factors are clear to me now,” he said. He also added, “I know I can and will be a better person.”

Religion’s smart-people problem: The shaky intellectual foundations of absolute faith

Religion’s smart-people problem: The shaky intellectual foundations of absolute faith | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Should you believe in a God? Not according to most academic philosophers. A comprehensive survey revealed that only about 14 percent of English speaking professional philosophers are theists.  As for what little religious belief remains among their colleagues, most professional philosophers regard it as a strange aberration among otherwise intelligent people. Among scientists the situation is much the same. Surveys of the members of the National Academy of Sciences, composed of the most prestigious scientists in the world, show that religious belief among them is practically nonexistent, about 7 percent.

We Need Schools to Be Different

We Need Schools to Be Different | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As Clay Shirky has noted, we currently are living through 'the largest expansion in expressive capability in human history.' We no longer live in a world where we passively receive information that is broadcast out to us by large, centralized entities. Instead, we now live within multidirectional conversation spaces in which 12-year-olds can reach audiences at scales that previously were reserved for major media companies, large corporations, and governments. We all now can have a voice. We all now can be publishers. We all now can find each other's thoughts and ideas and can share, cooperate, collaborate, and take collective action. Time and geography are no longer barriers to communicating and working together.

Atlas hid: Uber has set up a decoy office to keep drivers away from its shiny new HQ

Atlas hid: Uber has set up a decoy office to keep drivers away from its shiny new HQ | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As Pando reported earlier this month, Uber’s office on Mission Street has been a focal point for protests by drivers. At first the company tried to keep the barbarians (read: people who make the company worth an estimated ten billion dollars) from the gates, sending firm reminders to drivers that they were not permitted to visit Uber zentrale. When that only seemed to make drivers more pissed, and make Uber look even more like the grand Randroid experiment I’ve previously described it as, the company tried a different tack: doling out bagels and coffee to disgruntled cabbies before shooing them away.
