Setting Standards for the Internet of Things - blogs.hbr.org (blog)

Setting Standards for the Internet of Things - blogs.hbr.org (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Fifteen years ago, one of the first major initiatives in the Internet of Things took place. In 1999, the Auto-ID Center was formed at MIT; it later became the Auto-ID Labs, a global consortium of researchers and practitioners. The goal of both organizations was to research and help implement radio-frequency identification devices (RFID). That same year also marked the first recorded use of the Internet of Things (IoT) term by an Auto-ID co-director. (While the concept of connected things goes back at least two decades, to our knowledge it was Kevin Ashton, a co-founder of the MIT Auto-ID Center, who first used the appealing IoT term in 1999.) RFID was arguably the first major IoT technology of any scale. While not all RFID devices are connected to the Internet, from the beginning the technology involved a networked collection of sensors that monitored physical devices.

Community groups such as New Era 4 All are fast becoming the new trade unions

Community groups such as New Era 4 All are fast becoming the new trade unions | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Last week witnessed another example of a victory secured by organised, grassroots protest. Millionaire Conservative MP Richard Benyon announced that the company he controls would sell its stake in an east London housing estate, where residents had been protesting against huge rent rises. And he exhibited a certain self-awareness when explaining why. “New Era residents have made it clear that they do not welcome our involvement in the future of the estate,” he noted. “They made it clear that they wanted us to pull out and this is what we have reluctantly decided to do.”

The Fall of Facebook

The Fall of Facebook | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Steadily, grindingly, it continues to take an ever greater share of our time and attention online. More than 800 million people use the site on an average day. Individuals are dependent on it to keep up not just with their friends but with their families. When a research company looked at how people use their phones, it found that they spend more time on Facebook than they do browsing the entire rest of the Web.

The Economy of Recognition - Person, Market and Society in Antonio Rosmini

The Economy of Recognition - Person, Market and Society in Antonio Rosmini | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Introducing an alternative philosophical foundation to the study of economics, this book explains and adopts the perspective of the Italian philosopher Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855), whose interpretation of economic action was fundamentally at odds with the prevailing and all-conquering utilitarianism of modernity. Rosmini, one of the most important Italian and Catholic philosophers of the modern age, eschewed the traditional concepts of subjectivism and individualism at the core of the utilitarian thesis, prefiguring today’s critique of ‘autistic economics’ with his assertion that micro-economic formulae consecrating the ‘maximization of utility’ derive not from scientific principles or even hypotheses, but from uncritically adopted philosophical ideas. It was an assault on the determinism he perceived as the fatal flaw in accepted economic theory.

Are You Ready to Trust a Decentralized Autonomous Organization? | P2P Foundation

Are You Ready to Trust a Decentralized Autonomous Organization? | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The “social” in a lot of online social networking turns out to be pretty weak. Sure, we can share pictures and opinions with thousands of people, even organize protests and recommend one another for jobs. But protests organized on Facebook event pages tend not to turn into lasting organizations that can wield power after the fact. The employer one finds through LinkedIn can’t exist solely on the network; there’s likely brick-and-mortar somewhere, and certainly some paper documents. Social media only goes so far. So it’s probably not surprising that bands of geeks — and their investor friends — are eager to upload more aspects of life to the Internet: from money to contracts to organizations to entire countries.
