Degrowth 2014 - Michel Bauwens on The Transition to a Sustainable Commons Society - YouTube

Degrowth will only be possible by changing the artificial scarcity-based design practices and engineering of the for-profit sector and by removing the incentive to externalize the true production costs in terms of matter and energy. A commons-oriented approach should combine global open design based in communities, local on-demand distributed manufacturing, and the use of renewable distributed energy. Along with changes in governance and ownership, it can contribute to a global phase transition.

'Canada Should Not Be Hostage' to Alberta: Jeremy Rifkin - TheTyee.ca | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Capitalism as we know it, our competitive system of exchange propped up by oil, coal and gas monopolies, is being eclipsed by a new economic model based on clean, decentralized energy and the principles of sharing. That vision of the future was described by Jeremy Rifkin -- famed futurist, business professor, author of 20 books, TED Talks speaker, namedropper of China's Premier Li Keqiang, and advisor to the European Union -- at this week's Zero Waste Conference 2014 in Vancouver.

When I was a kid, I went to computer camp to learn how to draw a green box on a black screen by telling a turtle commands in the LOGO programming language. Nowadays, my two-year daughter expertly works my smartphone when she sneaks it out of my bag, using her apps and watching her videos much better than her grandmother ever could.

Beware of Geeks Bearing Grifts - UC Berkeley (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It seems as if the news media have become a wholly owned subsidiary of the internet technology complex (ITC) these days. No matter which seemingly outrageous new product or system is being put forth, it will become ‘news’ in print and online, unpaid advertising that assumes that all of us have little else to do but sit here and salivate over the next great new development, however futuristic and socially disruptive it is.

Virtually everything: How the physical world is being consumed by software ... - The Next Web | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

With the progress of time, and the advances in technology which that brought, we saw a shift – a device wasn’t just a machine any more, or rather a machine was sometimes more than one device. Often prompted by the Open-Source-brew-it-yourself movement there was a change from dedication of all the resources of a device to a single function to excess capability of a device being used to achieve another function.

The sharing economy may be the first time verticals beat horizontals | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

All you need to see is one full tech cycle to know the company that describes itself as the, say, “Facebook but just for people who eat peanut butter,” isn’t going to make it. There are always hundreds of them — many more inane than that description, some less. Somehow they find cash. But almost none become big companies — fewer still even result in a decent acquisition.

Airbnb's New Tax is the Future of the Sharing Economy - In The Capital

Airbnb's New Tax is the Future of the Sharing Economy - In The Capital | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Airbnb announced late on Wednesday that it would start collecting a 14 percent hotel occupancy tax in San Francisco starting in October. The new tax will be added to Airbnb fees and given to the city by the startup as a way of appeasing the angry regulators besieging it in its home city. It's also more than likely a harbinger of how Airbnb, and possibly the rest of the sharing economy, may seek to compromise with the local governments that cause so many legal and regulatory headaches for them.
