Challenging Casino Capitalism and Authoritarian Politics in the Age of ... - Truthdig

Challenging Casino Capitalism and Authoritarian Politics in the Age of ... - Truthdig | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

There is by now an overwhelming catalogue of evidence revealing the depth and breadth of the corporate- and state-sponsored assaults being waged against democracy in the United States. Indeed, it appears that the nation has entered a new and more ruthless historical era, marked by a growing disinvestment in the social state, public institutions, and civic morality. The attack on the social state is of particular importance because it represents an attempt to shift social protections to the responsibility of individuals while at the same time privatizing investments in the public good and undermining the bonds of communal solidarity. The renowned sociologist Zygmunt Bauman makes this clear in his definition and defense of the social state:

A short video on Commons Based Reciprocity Licenses | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Work on developing Commons Based Reciprocity Licenses (or CBRLs, for short) continues apace here at the P2P Foundation. When speaking of the types of licenses, we often find it hard to explain how they fill a niche in the alt. license spectrum, falling somewhere between the straight up copyleft and the popular Creative Commons Non-Commercial License.

Reddit CEO Yishan Wong On Giving Stock To Users: “We Have A Crazy Plan.” | TechCrunch | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
When Wong served as an early director at Facebook for five years, crypto-currencies were around, but they weren’t as widely accepted or understood as they are today. He and Y Combinator head Sam Altman, who just personally led a $50 million round in the company announced today, want to use them as a tool to distribute shares in the company back to the millions of Reddit users, or Redditors, that log in every day. They’ve set aside 10 percent of the round announced today for that purpose.

Capitalism vs. the Climate - P2P Foundation

Capitalism vs. the Climate - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
"This Changes Everything deserves to be viewed not as one of the greatest nonfiction works of the 2010s, but as one of the greatest nonfiction works of all-time. Disregard that 2008 Obama speech—the publication of this book will truly mark the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow, and the planet began to heal. I write this filled with self-doubt; I’m not certain I can put into words the majesty, the power, the glory of this book. I grew covetous of her talent as I read it; how can one communicate so much truth so effectively, so clearly, so crisply?

Logic Trees for Inclusive Discourse - P2P Foundation

Logic Trees for Inclusive Discourse - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
"Making political decision-making truly inclusive is always challenging. Diversity of concerns and perspectives to be considered is a significant driver of complexity. How much inclusiveness can be achieved is limited by how much diversity can be integrated without losing the ability to organize constructive discourses that lead to adequate decisions, and that achieve this within a reasonable timeframe. I propose that “logic tree” methods of the so-called “Theory of Constraints” are highly promising as a means of managing this complexity in a logically and socially sound and inclusive manner. Mapping concerns by such logic trees allows to identify power structures (which turn up as root causes for concerns), conflicts, and to discover and discuss innovative ideas. The application of these methods to Internet governance and sustainable development objectives should be tried and researched."

It’s hard to find many co-operatives with the kind of practical sophistication and visionary ambitions as CIC – the Catalan Integral Cooperative -- in Spain.  CIC describes itself as a “transitional initiative for social transformation from below, through self-management, self-organization, and networking.”  It considers the state unable to advance the public good because of its deep entanglements with market capitalism -- so it has set about building its own working alternatives to the banking system and state.

Artificial Islands as a solution to outcrowding

Artificial Islands as a solution to outcrowding | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Recently, studies have shown that wildlife populations have declined enormously in the world, by one third if we look at land-based species, and with over two thirds if we take a closer peek on marine life. A large part of this – especially regarding the valuable oceanic ecosystems – can be explained with direct exploitation (like overfishing or poaching). However, another explanation could be that we as a species are “out-crowding” other species, not by covering all of the planet with urban areas (though this kind of expansion also is problematic), but especially through the amount of space needed to produce food currently.

“Technology is an alienating force, removing us from contact with community, with Nature, and our Mother Earth; and yet, at the same time, we heard of communications technology as something that was preserving native languages, allowing native communities to reach out to each other and to supporters around the world, empowering youth and providing new ways for Elders to tell their stories.

Are civil society movements 'oppressive'? Jai Sen on Engaging Critically with the Reality and Concept of Civil Society | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The emerging global alliance and cooperation between civil, social, and political actors – that is collectively referred to as ‘global civil society’ – is first and foremost a crucial vehicle for transnational civil solidarity, which translates into the consolidation of the hold of civil societies transnationally. In a very limited sense, it is true that this coming on to the world stage of non-state actors contributes to the democratisation of world politics, a stage that has so far been monopolised by nation-states. But seen through the lens of the historic larger and wider democratisation that is beginning to unfold in our times, this cooperation and consolidation is, more importantly – due to the dynamics of civility and its internal tendencies to corporatisation that I have tried to discuss in this essay –, an instrument for the consolidation, strengthening, and imposition of historically unequal social and political relations and entrenched interests at local, national, regional, and global levels. In fundamental terms, what is fondly called ‘global civil society’ is therefore today arguably contributing to less democracy, not more.

How collective intelligence emerges

How collective intelligence emerges | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The Wikipedia, one of the richest human knowledge repositories on the Internet, has been developed by collective intelligence. To gain insight into Wikipedia, one asks how initial ideas emerge and develop to become a concrete article through the online collaborative process? Led by this question, the author performed a microscopic observation of the knowledge creation process on the recent article, "Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster." The author collected not only the revision history of the article but also investigated interactions between collaborators by making a user-paragraph network to reveal an intellectual intervention of multiple authors. The knowledge creation process on the Wikipedia article was categorized into 4 major steps and 6 phases from the beginning to the intellectual balance point where only revisions were made. To represent this phenomenon, the author developed a visaphor (digital visual metaphor) to digitally represent the article's evolving concepts and characteristics. Then the author created a dynamic digital information visualization using particle effects and network graph structures. The visaphor reveals the interaction between users and their collaborative efforts as they created and revised paragraphs and debated aspects of the article.

The Sharing Economy Under Pressure - The American

The Sharing Economy Under Pressure - The American | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Twenty years ago, government officials were trying to figure out how to get the solo driver commuting in his gas-guzzling car to share a ride, thereby saving some space on the road and helping the environment. In 2014, people in urban areas are clamoring to ride-share through technology applications that better utilize invested capital in individuals’ cars, reduce the number of vehicles on the road, use fewer parking spaces, and have the added benefit of giving ride-sharing drivers a way to make money on their own schedule. Government officials, meanwhile, are now saying no to the sharing economy and yes to old regulations that in many cases are a source of revenue for municipalities and that keep an artificial scarcity model in place.
