An interview with Sapphire Open Systems - a full IoT stack, open source, low power wireless platform from the hardware pin up to the web and beyond | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The Internet of Things is a market capable of potentially shaping and fueling the demand for a diverse blend of new products. These IoT products  have the power to link multiple items – data and the cloud – creating a slew of connected products. Meanwhile, thenetwork effect unfolds as the socialization of devices yields innovation. Ultimately, this transforms into new value chains, business and service models. As you may recall, the mobile ecosystem offered a wide range of specialized choices with a multitude of apps for smartphones and tablets, significantly changing how people used their mobile devices. We now find, shop, consume, entertain, and buy things on mobile devices as a direct result of apps and their easy accessibility.

Turkey's Twitter Wars Heat Up

Turkey's Twitter Wars Heat Up | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
As the Turkish government continues to squeeze freedom of expression, many Turks have found themselves resorting increasingly to social media in order to learn what's going on in their country. (92 percent of Turkey's online population now uses social media, the highest share in the world.) But this refuge is now coming under severe pressure as well. And the trend is particularly noticeable in the case of Twitter.

Commercialisation: the antithesis of sharing | Share The World's Resources (STWR) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The danger is not commercialisation per se but our constant identification with its inner and outer manifestation, in which humanity’s intelligence is led in the opposite direction from nature and spiritual evolution.

Towards a Security and Opportunity Society - P2P Foundation

Towards a Security and Opportunity Society - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Over the past generation, the economic risks American families face have increased substantially. Yet public programs have largely failed to adapt to these new and newly intensified risks, and private workplace benefits have eroded. As a result, Americans increasingly and themselves on an economic tightrope, without an adequate safety net if, as is ever more likely, they lose their footing. This tightrope both creates anxiety about the future and causes hardship when families do lose their balance. But importantly, it also threatens opportunity by making it more difficult for families to feel sufficiently secure to look confidently toward the future and make the risky investments in skills, education, and assets necessary to prosper in a highly dynamic and uncertain economy.

Communalism - P2P Foundation

Communalism - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
"I wish to propose that the democratic and potentially practicable dimension of the libertarian goal be expressed as Communalism, a term that, unlike political terms that once stood unequivocally for radical social change, has not been historically sullied by abuse. Even ordinary dictionary definitions of Communalism, I submit, capture to a great degree the vision of a "Commune of communes" that is being lost by current Anglo-American trends that celebrate anarchy variously as "chaos," as a mystical "oneness" with "nature," as self-fulfillment or as "ecstasy," but above all as personalistic.7

Amazon Must Be Stopped

Amazon Must Be Stopped | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
efore we speak ill of Amazon, let us kneel down before it. Twenty years ago, the company began with the stated goal of creating a bookstore as comprehensive as the great Library of Alexandria, and then quickly managed to make even that grandiloquent ambition look puny. Amazon could soon conjure the full text of almost any volume onto a phone in less time than a yawn. Its warehouses are filled with an unabridged catalogue of items that comes damn close to serving every human need, both basic and esoteric—a mere click away, speedily delivered, and as cheap as capitalism permits.

Ayn Rand’s capitalist paradise lost: The inside story of a libertarian scam

Ayn Rand’s capitalist paradise lost: The inside story of a libertarian scam | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The theme of Ayn Rand’sAtlas Shrugged, according to Ms. Rand herself, is “what happens to the world when the Prime Movers go on strike.” The prime movers are corporate executives – “the motor of the world” – and Rand imagines what would happen if they all just went away. To Rand this is nothing less than “a picture of the world with its motor cut off.”

Al Gore says Silicon Valley is a “stalker economy”

Al Gore says Silicon Valley is a “stalker economy” | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
I was in the audience listening to the interview and was surprised and impressed with his willingness to address serious tech-related issues head on. He called NSA’s mass surveillance operations unconstitutional, quoted from James Bamford’s book “The Puzzle Palace,” criticized the ongoing push to privatize public education and repeatedly talked about America’s yawning wealth inequality and the hijacking of its political system by the ultra rich. He also argued against the idea that charity can replace government, and dismissed the widely held belief in the tech world that capitalism and markets are somehow more efficient than democracy.

Late on the evening of January 11, 2013, someone sent me an interesting email. Sitting at the kitchen table in the small cottage where I lived in Berkeley with my wife and two cats, I decrypted it.

Open Government and Civil Society - P2P Foundation

Open Government and Civil Society - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The rise of information and communication technologies (ICTs) as the driving force of globalization, has generated an intense interest in the use of ICTs for the promotion both of good government and of social development in the operations of modern democratic societies. This is particularly so with respect to the role of civil society as a force for the progressive democratization of politics and for the alleviation of social and economic inequities. The relevance of ICTs in this respect is also central to the promotion of what has been described as Good Living (Buen Vivir) as the defining purpose of Ecuador’s National Plan. Open Government and an empowered and engaged civil society are the political prerequisites of such a transition.

The 7 strangest libertarian ideas

The 7 strangest libertarian ideas | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Few movements in the United States today harbor stranger political ideas than the self-proclaimed libertarians. The Rand Paul school of libertarianism is at least as far outside the mainstream on the right as, say, a rather doctrinaire old-school form of Marxism/Leninism is on the left. The difference is this: The mainstream media isn’t telling us that we’re in the middle of a “Marxist/Leninist moment.” Leninist politicians aren’t being touted as serious presidential contenders. And all the media chatter we’re hearing about a “Libertarian moment” ignores the very harsh, extreme and sometimes downright ugly ideas that are being disseminated under that banner.
