Trailer: The Altruism Revolution | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“In our materialist society where it seems that cynicism and profit reign supreme, one idea is shaking up conventional thinking: Altruism has existed since the dawn of time, it’s an essential factor of social living… and we can prove it scientifically. We are able to cultivate it, to promote a better society based on cooperation in order to face up to the challenges of our turbulent world. A diverse group of researchers are betting on it : primatologists, economists, neuroscientists, psychologists, doctors and… a geneticist who became a Buddhist monk.”

Uber's tax-avoidance strategy costs government millions. How's that for "sharing?" | 48 hills

Uber's tax-avoidance strategy costs government millions. How's that for "sharing?" | 48 hills | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
By Darwin Bond Graham JULY 10, 2014 — Uber, a leading ride-sharing company, has drawn the ire of regulators and cab drivers in dozens of cities across North America and Europe by exploiting regulatory loopholes that allow it to operate a virtual fleet of cabs largely outside of existing transportation and safety rules. Here’s an idea: instead of #crowdfundgreece, why not donate to something that will make a real difference to Greeks, right now

Here’s an idea: instead of #crowdfundgreece, why not donate to something that will make a real difference to Greeks, right now | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The campaign to crowdfund 1.6 billion euros for Greece on indiegogo is a wonderful initiative to show solidarity, and indeed it has collected an astonishing amount of money in a short time. The only problem is that if the full amount is not collected, all donations will be returned. Although we’d like to hope that there’s a chance the campaign will reach its target, it is quite a long shot.

In support of the “No” in the Greek Referendum: 4) Theodoros Karyotis | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“The decision of the Greek government, late last Friday, to put the proposals of the creditors to referendum caught by surprise even those who, from a grassroots perspective, have been fighting against the murderous austerity in Greece in recent years. After all, the negotiations had just come to yet another impasse, the bailout program was coming to an end, and the institutions previously known as the “Troika” had once more rejected the proposal of the Greek government to transfer the cost of the debt crisis to the well-off, demanding instead more sacrifices on behalf of the disadvantaged: further reductions in wages and pensions, a renewed attack on our public and common goods, further decline in our labor and social rights.

Social Ecology, Kurdistan, and the Origins of Freedom

Social Ecology, Kurdistan, and the Origins of Freedom | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I recently had the opportunity to visit Turkey and North Kurdistan. In that short time, Istanbul celebrated the third year anniversary of Gezi Park, the Democratic Union Party (HDP) won unprecedented political representation in the Turkish parliament, and the cantons of Cizire and Kobane were joined. Throughout these dramatic events, I was often sitting cross-legged on living room floors, drinking tea and listening to the stories of journalists, activists, and families who had participated in the Rojava Revolution. Such conversations were made possible through many comrades, most of all through Jihad Hemmi, who acted as a guide, translator, and intellectual companion. Through my travels, I was given a glimpse of the relation between the Kurdish freedom movement and the philosophy of social ecology. By the same token, I gained a much clearer sense of the extraordinary scope and meaning of this particular revolutionary struggle.

Introduction to P2P Class Theory ( 2) : Who Is a Tech Worker ? | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“In the U.S., the stereotype of the “techie” is probably a young white or Asian man who earns a relatively high salary as a programmer in Silicon Valley or some large coastal city. But while this image has a basis in the exclusionary demographics of programming, it shouldn’t be taken as representative of workers in the tech industry as a whole.

What can we do to help the Greeks?

What can we do to help the Greeks? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In 2010, it was obvious the Greek debt was unsustainable, that it could not be repaid, feckless creditors in cahoots with a  corrupt Greek government, nevertheless lent Greece more money, money that went to pay off the German banks, hedge funds etc. Greece was addled with more debt, society bailed out the feckless lenders. The conditions imposed on Greece were onerous.

The citizens of Greece face a referendum Sunday that could decide the survival of their elected government and the fate of the country in the Eurozone and Europe.
