Collaborative Platforms Empower Citizens To Shape Their Communities [My Ideal City] | AdFlipoff

An example of this type of participatory platform is Neighborland, which aims to bring people of the same community together to develop projects that will improve their neighborhood. The website allows people to share their ideas for improvement and gather support from people in the community. Once an idea gets enough support, and community members decide it is achievable, they can work together on the site to accomplish the idea. Similarly, the NYC-specific online platform miLES facilitates bottom-up urban planning by co-creating with residents of specific neighborhoods.

New Left Project | Syriza MPs revolt against the agreement

At a twelve hour-long meeting of the SYRIZA Parliamentary Group held on Wednesday 25th February, parliamentarians criticised the deal signed between the Greek government and the Eurogroup. The meeting culminated with an indicative vote for or against the deal. Panagiotis Lafazanis, the leader of the Left Platform and current minister for productive reconstruction and energy, requested that the votes be counted, but this was rejected. Nonetheless, with about thirty MPs having left the room when the vote took place, a third of the MPs present rejected the deal either with a ‘no’ or a ‘blank’ vote.

Young people are setting up workers’ co-operatives to fight against inequality | Gabriel Bristow

Young people are setting up workers’ co-operatives to fight against inequality | Gabriel Bristow | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Rent and property prices are not the only thing stacked against young people. Low wages and insecurity in competitive job markets – be they creative or in the third sector – are extending further into graduates’ working lives. Rather than a youthful rite of passage, zero-hours contracts and low pay are now a regular feature of certain professions well into people’s 30s. Academia is the example par excellence. Once prestigious, secure and well paid; today, while the prestige remains, the pay and security of the next generation of academics has fallen off a cliff. Traditional understandings of what constitutes a middle-class job just don’t hold up in quite the same way.

Revolution Defended in Rojava--For Now, by Alexander Kolokotronis

, New Politics | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

After approximately four and a half months of fighting, Kurdish forces have successfully pushed the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (known as ISIS or ISIL) out of Kobanî. The coalition of ground forces most notably included the People’s Defense Units (YPG) , Women’s Defense Units (YPJ) , and the Peshmerga from the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG).At the same time, through the air, a U.S. led-coalition made 700 airstrikes against ISIS. On February 6 it was reported “fourteen more villages and some strategically important points have been liberated.” In an October 2014 article for Naked Capitalism Claude Salhani noted the strategic importance of the region. Salhani stated “victory for” ISIS in the region “would give the group prestige among the dozens of groups lined up in the fight against Syrian President Bashar Assad. It would also secure the terror organization’s flow of oil to a lucrative market.”

Geert Lovink and Patrice Riemens: The Bitcoin Experience (part I) | P2P Foundation

Geert Lovink and Patrice Riemens: The Bitcoin Experience (part I) | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Bitcoin does not respond to an effective demand, but to an emotional desire. The internet crypto currency expresses a longing for liberation through the mediation of technology. It grows out of a post-apocalyptic will to start all over again, in between financial crises of epic proportions, to put an end to the never-ending recession. This time, so do believers in Bitcoin maintain, the economy will be lead by our tribe of techno-libertarians, and not by the vile, corrupted banksters and politicians in their employ. Amidst the rubble of the collapsing global capitalism, there is nothing left to demand—who would listen anyway? What is your blueprint for the next monetary system? After all, Bitcoin architecture is not a given. Let’s be frank: everything is up for grabs, including the premises of the Bitcoin project itself, which is what we intend to do here.

Facebook Is Not a Adequate Communication Platform | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The ironic thing about Facebook is that, for a social media platform, it’s not really very much about social communication. It’s really more of a short-form news/blog aggregator. It’s still just another kind of bulletin board.

Being a facilitator is a subtle art, like that of being a healer or coach. A good healer or coach does very little, allowing the client to heal or activate themselves. Its about accessing the Tao.

Rojava's Communes and Councils

On Saturday, December 6, the Academic Delegation to Rojava met in Qamişlo with two representatives of Tev-dem, the Movement for a Democratic Society. Abdulkerim Omar and Çınar Salih first gave us some background to Rojava’s thinking about the state and democracy. Then they explained the structure of the democratic self-government—the commune and council system—and took our questions. Speaking through translators, Salih did most of the talking.

The Evergreen cooperative model in Cleveland is no panacea and confronts multiple obstacles | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“It’s been harder than I thought, but I’m heartened we’re still here,” Howard says. “We’ve stabilized, and we’re back on a growth curve, and I think Evergreen has been able to—it’s something that represents a possibility or hope for people, in a field where so much of what people have tried has just hit a dead end. This has been a learning laboratory; it’s been an experiment. I don’t say Evergreen’s the answer, but I’d think it’s been able to unlock the imagination for people way beyond Cleveland.”
