Convergent Risk, Social Futurism, and the Wave of Change (Part 1 of 2) - Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies

Convergent Risk, Social Futurism, and the Wave of Change (Part 1 of 2) - Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

All Social Futurist policies should be approached from a pragmatic and flexible (rather than ideologically constrained) point of view. Our main concern is therefore with policies that actually solve problems, so the use of empirical evidence is central to Social Futurism. Policy development and review should emphasise the setting of quantifiable goals and review of empirical evidence wherever that is an option, to encourage policy that evolves to better meet our goals over time.

Book description

Book description | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

From mid 2014 until 2025, there will be seven 18-month “Moore’s Law” generations, potentially resulting in a 128-fold increase in raw computing performance (that’s 2 multiplied by itself 7 times). That will enable devices with core components that are, for example, 5 times more powerful, 5 times cheaper, and 5 times smaller (hence requiring 5 times less energy input) than today’s computers. Over the same time period, we can expect similarly striking progress in cloud computing, big data analytics, robotics, synthetic biology, renewable energy systems, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, and many other fields.

Blood and Gore: 'Capitalism is in danger of falling apart' - Financial Times

Blood and Gore: 'Capitalism is in danger of falling apart' - Financial Times | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Investor sentiment is completely different in 2014 than it was a year earlier, he points out. “Last year everyone was talking about Solyndra [a solar company, backed by the US government, that failed]. This year it is all about Solar City [the solar equipment installer that recently listed on the Nasdaq] and Tesla [the electric carmakerowned by PayPal billionaire Elon Musk]. Media sentiment has changed, too, because the business case has become even clearer and more compelling.”

Stigmergy as a Universal Coordination Mechanism - P2P Foundation

Stigmergy as a Universal Coordination Mechanism - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"The concept of stigmergy has been used to analyze self-organizing activities in an ever-widening range of domains, from social insects via robotics and social media to human society. Yet, it is still poorly understood, and as such its full power remains underappreciated. The present paper clarifies the issue by defining stigmergy as a mechanism of indirect coordination in which the trace left by an action in a medium stimulates a subsequent action. It then analyses the fundamental components of the definition: action, agent, medium, trace and coordination. Stigmergy enables complex, coordinated activity without any need for planning, control, communication, simultaneous presence, or even mutual awareness. This makes the concept applicable to a very broad variety of cases, from chemical reactions to individual cognition and Internet-supported collaboration in Wikipedia.

Framing Interventions | Graham Scambler

It is one thing to explore options and alternatives, for education or health systems for example, but quite another to construct a blueprint for a post-capitalist society. Maybe utopian blueprintsshould remain petit narratives since they can too easily appeal to totalitarian casts of mind and become ideologies in their own right. Marx was acutely conscious of this.

Mobile Apps, Code Halos, the Sharing Economy and Trustonomics | Linux

Mobile Apps, Code Halos, the Sharing Economy and Trustonomics | Linux | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I love receiving gifts in the form of new insights!  It doesn't matter if others received the same gift years ago and I am just getting it now.  If it is new to me, I get excited.  It is like waking up in the morning and discovering a new room in your house.  I read an article by Thomas Friedman in the New York Times this weekend titled, "And Now for a Bit of Good News."  The subject of the article was the new "sharing economy," think Uber, Lyft, Airbnb, etc. In the article, Friedman calls Airbnb a "Trust Platform." To me, this weekend, this term was a gift.  He is so right.
