The Future of Manufacturing: Platforms and Distributed Fabrication

The Future of Manufacturing: Platforms and Distributed Fabrication | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
I wrote this post earlier on in November, in preparation of my speech at second Shenzhen (China) International Industrial Design Fair, where I was asked to talk about the role of Openness and Platforms in the Manufacturing industry, in the so called age of Makers. China looks an increasingly exciting place-to-be for those interested in re-thinking manufacturing. 30 years of optimizations left there a strong, reconfigurable, efficient and collaborative manufacturing  ecosystem that looks an ideal place to experiment in open manufacturing as many are already doing. It will also depends on politics obviously, but I think China has a chance for a leadership in this shift. The post follows after the slideshare embed. Will help you understand much more of the presentation. This post, partially amended, first appeared in Italian on CheFuturo.

What is sharing economy?

What is sharing economy? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Let´s imagine three digital urbanites: Sam, Luke and Vicky. Vicky is an Australian based in New York whereas Sam and Luke live in London. Sam and Luke need a place to host them as they are traveling to San Francisco in the next couple of weeks. They refuse to stay at an anonymous hotel looking the same as the many they have been to, over the past decade. They would rather find a cosy flat in the center, so they decide to check online the available possibilities offered by the site Airbnb. They settle for the creatively decorated studio-flat of Vicky, as they are drawn by its beautiful pictures displayed online.

STOA | Impact and Potential of collaborative Internet and additive manufacturing technologies

STOA | Impact and Potential of collaborative Internet and additive manufacturing technologies | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The Internet is allowing virtual communities to easily co-create digital assets and intellectual content at a very low “cooperation cost”. The ideology behind the open-source software development methodology has actually spread to new domains such as open-data, open-design and open-innovation. A new set of Internet tools and services is now available to leverage the “wealth and the wisdom of the crowd”. Complex projects can be crowd-sourced and crowd-funded by small and medium sized companies to reduce their cost of doing business. The “crowd” itself uses and modifies “open-data” to “co-create” new open-designs for the purpose of participating to “crowd-sourced” projects.
