Degrowth 2014 - Michel Bauwens on The Transition to a Sustainable Commons Society - YouTube

Degrowth will only be possible by changing the artificial scarcity-based design practices and engineering of the for-profit sector and by removing the incentive to externalize the true production costs in terms of matter and energy. A commons-oriented approach should combine global open design based in communities, local on-demand distributed manufacturing, and the use of renewable distributed energy. Along with changes in governance and ownership, it can contribute to a global phase transition.

CartoCiudad: Towards an inspired national thoroughfares network map

CartoCiudad is an official cartographic database of the Spanish cities and villages with their streets and roads networks topologically structured, with spatial continuity all over Spain. This project, launched in 2006, is the result of harmonization and integration of official digital cartography and information produced by the main suppliers of information about addresses and transports in Spain: Cadastre, Statistical Office, Post Office and the National Geographic Institute (hereafter IGN). Public organisations from several autonomous regions (Basque Country, Navarre, Valencia, Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Andalusia and Murcia) take part in this data flow as well, by means of inter-administrative collaboration agreements with IGN and according to their own competences in producing large scale cartography. Furthermore, collaboration with the rest of the autonomous regions is envisaged to decentralize the data maintenance and ensure the future sustainability of the project. This cooperation actions make CartoCiudad go towards the fulfilment of one of the most important principles of INSPIRE Directive: data is captured once, and exclusively by the competent organisation, then sharing the spatial information across the various levels of public authority and across different sectors.

Reinventing office space: Architects call for the 'death of the desk' - Raw Story (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“The idea that the desk is a unit of productivity is changing very, very rapidly. Your productivity is not measured by the amount of time you sit behind a thing called a desk. It is what you do. It is about your output,” he said. “It is about getting the balance of specs right so it is not just get everybody in the open, have open plan but have the right balance of spaces where you can get in a zone of concentration.”

The Politics of Piracy - Daily Californian

The Politics of Piracy - Daily Californian | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The walls ooze a sticky white in my freshly painted room. Paired with what little stuff I have, the setting verges on monastic. Tony, Rodrigo, my buddy Nihil and I sit on a muted-green excerpt of carpet, a luxury of color in this space. We’re old friends, but tonight the air is unusually formal; we’ve gathered to talk about To and Ro’s class the Politics of Piracy.

Collective Wisdom in an Age of Algorithms

Changes to platforms we use regularly are always slightly traumatic, as we invariably discover when we roll out a new library website and the complaints begin, or we find out a database interface has changed radically the day we’re introducing it to students. Platform changes are even more distressing when they are sites to which we contribute content. By creating social circles and sharing information on websites, we often forget they belong to other people who have values and motivations different from ours. Those values are not likely to appear in their tagline or mission statement. (Google, for instance, is not really in the business of defeating evil.) Their motivations aren’t going to be easy to find in the click-through terms of service, either, and morphing privacy policies don’t clarify the situation.
