The best innovation program isn’t a program at all

The best innovation program isn’t a program at all | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

At work, a small reward for simply having an idea is patronizing and perhaps worse. There’s plenty of research showing that offering monetary rewards actually limitscreative thinking. And when there are successful programs – as with Toyota’s famous suggestion program seeing over 80% of the ideas implemented – it’s not because of better prizes, but because people intrinsically wanted to make their work better. And, as Nick Milton points out, because the suggestions they made were approved in a localized, distributed process by people much closer to the work.

The intellectual property interests are at it again, trying to leverage their rights to take away yours. No one knows this better than 44-year-old Eric Smith of Charleston, West Virginia. Smith has devoted his life to the office supply company founded by his father—a company that’s now under legal attack by printing behemoth Lexmark International, Inc.

Proposed Strategy for the Commons Movement in 2015 - P2P Foundation

Proposed Strategy for the Commons Movement in 2015 - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

We are definitely going to a period of dislocation in 2015. The Greek debacle has shown the difficulty of any strategy based on national sovereignty and the end of any real political democracy for European nations ; the difficulties in China , Brazil and elsewhere show the period of high growth for emerging economies has come to an end; and the success of candidates like Donald Trump, which obtains 40% approval rating by promising to deport fifteen million people, shows the potential return of barbarism in the heart of the over-developed world.

Call 28: Winter School '‘From Uber to Amazon Mechanical Turk: nontraditional labour markets driven by technological and organisational change’ — InGRID | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Technology is a powerful driver for change in the world of labour. The objective of the InGRID winter school is to aggregate scholars and policymakers interested in two recent but rapidly growing phenomena: the sharing economy and crowdsourcing. More specifically, we are interested in the labour aspects of these innovation: Do they lead to a growth in the share of freelance workers? What are the working conditions of crowdsourced workers? Do we need to adapt our definitions of labour to fit these new challenges? Do we observe a blurring of the borders between work and leisure in the sharing economy?

Why I Support Corbyn For UK Labour Leade

There was a time when most educated people knew that the Earth was the center of the universe. There was a sophisticated “Geocentric” model, known as the “Ptolemaic system”, that predicted to very high accuracy the observed movement of all the objects in the Heavens, as they purportedly orbited the Earth on perfect crystalline spheres. 500 years ago, anyone who proposed an alternative model—in which the Sun was the center and the Earth was just another planet orbiting it—was derided as a heretic and a madman.

“Our overall behaviour online suggests that, collectively, the network supports and encourages a digitally socialist viewpoint: sharing, collective ownership and control of the means of production, and so on. But counter-intuitively, our desire to have lots of free stuff has created powerful data landowners and landlords, to whom we are quite happy to cede power over everything that identifies us.”

GIS mildogg32's curator insight, August 30, 8:41 PM

This is article is about a woman who created a tent that can help support and sustain the lives of millions of displaced refugees across the world. This tent was made with refugees in mind as it is light weight, waterproof, water collecting, solar powered, and weather durable. It is easy to pack up and carry, but provides water and energy when set up. This tent connects to international relations as it can be used as something the higher nations in the world can give out to refugees. The UN could definitely adopt this tent and use it to help refugees in Syria, Palestine, etc. Personally, I believe this tent is a great idea, but is it cost effective? The article does not state how much a tent like this would cost and if it too expensive, I fear nobody will use it.

The Evidence Keeps Pouring In: Capitalism Just Isn't Working

The Evidence Keeps Pouring In: Capitalism Just Isn't Working | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

To followers of Ayn Rand and Ronald Reagan, and to all the business people who despise government, 'community' is a form of 'communism.' Even taking the train is too communal for them. Americans have been led to believe that only individuals matter, that every person should fend for him/herself, that "winner-take-all" is the ultimate goal, and that the winners have no responsibility to others.

WSN : Netzpolitik shows importance of free press | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A functioning, unthreatened free press is a cornerstone of a functioning democracy and a non-negotiable right of its citizens. Reporting on those in power is an essential function of good journalism, and its importance is codified in the German and U.S. constitutions. Charging individual reporters with treason anywhere has an undeniably chilling effect on reporters everywhere.
