Social networks are getting political, but it's no revolution, says Pew study | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"Liking" a post by the president or a human rights group may not be the most powerful form of political expression, but according to a recent Pew Research Center study, it is at least something that a person of nearly any age, location or economic status can do — and does.

More Canadian consumers seeking green products and services in current ... - DigitalJournal.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Canadians are increasingly looking for green products and services, and many are even willing to pay more for them, but they may be selective on which they choose based on the strength of environmental claims. The findings, that suggest an important shift to mainstream green purchasing practices, are a result of an inaugural survey on green purchasing behaviours and attitudes in Canada commissioned by SCA, the maker of the Tork® brand of away-from-home hygiene products.  As an international leader in creating an ethical and sustainable marketplace, SCA worked with Leger in Canada to capture in-the-moment consumer insights that reflect market trends.

The sharing economy and VCs: A marriage made through money - CITY A.M. | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Hitchhiking once meant a compassionate driver picking up a rain-sodden stranger for nothing more than heartfelt gratitude. Today, its modern equivalent is “ridesharing”. Drivers now list journeys on their smartphones and sell seats in advance to offset the cost of petrol. Passengers book a seat online just like booking a train ticket, except that ridesharing is a cheaper way of travelling between cities. Global ridesharing leaderBlaBlaCar transports more people than Eurostar. According to its co-founder Nicolas Brusson, “We’ve taken the car – once a private form of transport – and made it public.”

Justin Miller on how Mapbox runs like an open source project - opensource.com

Justin Miller on how Mapbox runs like an open source project - opensource.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This is the meat of my talk, but basically, the organization is flat and open. People join in on projects based on interest and available time, or start their own projects based on an idea and the ability to convince a couple coworkers that it's a worthwhile effort. If you have an idea for improvement, talk is cheap and putting in the code to demonstrate its potential is preferred. It's a very exciting way to choose direction and participation and lets everyone engage based on their interests and skill set. And nearly everything we write, anything that's easily reusable by someone else, is completely open source.

Is a British car really British? - The Guardian

Is a British car really British? - The Guardian | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

You are one of many readers who equate British-made consumer goods with a superior social and environmental-justice pedigree. Is this justified? To a degree, yes. Production closer to home should be more controlled and provide a bulwark against the fickle global marketplace and the many ethical abuses associated with globalisation. In the garment industry, for example, while it would be naive to suggest that the UK doesn’t have any sweatshops, onshoring production could have avoided the chaos we saw with the Rana Plaza disaster.
