The dynamics of attention in a p2p world

The dynamics of attention in a p2p world | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“This interview explores the programme and possibilities of the peer- to-peer project for redesigning capitalist economics. In a wide- ranging discussion with Sam Kinsley, Michel Bauwens explores what demonstrates, for him, the superiority of a peer-to-peer production and distribution model, both historically and in terms of the recent context of Web 2.0. He argues that what is at stake in the emerging transformations of digital online networking and communications is an attempt to recreate an emancipatory potential. A significant challenge to this potential is the ways in which the attention economy captures and channels a certain modality of producer- consumer relations, which must be countered by alternatives. Bauwens forcefully argues that such alternatives are best met through the ‘horizontal socialisation’ of the peer-to-peer paradigm.’

The Endgame in Greece

The Endgame in Greece | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
After months of wrangling, the showdown between Greece and its European creditors has come down to a standoff over pensions and taxes. The Greek government is right to have drawn the line, while the EU could pay dearly for its petulance.

A Europe of Domination or of Solidarity?

A Europe of Domination or of Solidarity? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The only sensible way forward is to cancel the Greek debt (or at least substantial swathes of it) and for the international community to support Greece's democratically elected government to rebuild its society and its economy. I ask my fellow Labour leadership candidates to echo this call to the Prime Minister, and for him to heed this call. It is in our own interests to do so. Let's use this as an opportunity to remake a Europe of solidarity.

In support of the "No" in the Greek Referendum | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Sunday’s referendum will mark a defining moment in Greece’s modern history and a decisive turn for Europe’s neoliberal project. The choice is very clear. Five years after the people of Greece first rose up against the anti-democratic imposition of the Troika’s austerity measures, they have finally been given the chance to decide upon their own …

ISIS Summit Vienna 2015—The Information Society at the Crossroads - MDPI Sciforum

ISIS Summit Vienna 2015—The Information Society at the Crossroads - MDPI Sciforum | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Feenberg (2002) analyses technology in terms of managerial autonomy to assert control over and through technological choices, implying the necessity of increased democratisation of technological relations in the workplace in achieving a more participatory and democratic society. I argue that the recent history of the relationship between organised labour and digital technologies has seen a retreat from earlier attempts to assert control over technology, most notably through the Scandinavian traditions of participatory design, to an increasingly tactical and defensive view of these technologies as tools in labour organising and campaigning. This reflects the decreasing power of organised labour in the industrialised West and global North, at least. Simultaneously, the workplace is no longer the only, or even primary, place in which the majority encounter sophisticated digital technologies. The most prominent debates about the use of ICT in social emancipation are largely outside the workplace, concerning for example, debates about surveillance, the technical and economic relations around technological infrastructure (as, for example in the US net neutrality debate), and the role of ICT in social uprisings (see for example, Castells 2012 ).

The love economy (1): Hazel Henderson on compound interest as a violation of the 2nd law of thermodynamics | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

if systems are too large and interconnected to manage and banks are “too big to fail,” then they need to be carefully dismantled and decentralized to restore diversity and resilience following nature’s design principles. Monetary monocultures now on a global scale have demonstrably failed. Healthy, homegrown, local economies need protection from global bankers and their casino. Complimentary local currencies and peer-to-peer finance are flourishing (see my “Democratizing Finance“). Bloated financial sectors can be downsized and return to their role of serving real economies. In the USA, small non-profit community development finance institutions (CDFIs) are growing to fill the needs of micro-businesses
