The Play Ethic: Who's watching us play - and why? William Davies on networks as "big parents"

The Play Ethic: Who's watching us play - and why? William Davies on networks as "big parents" | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I once wrote a phrase up on my website which went something like: "play will be to the 21st century what work was to the last 300 years of industrial society - our dominant way of knowing, doing and creating value". It must have been a zinger of a meme, because it was picked up by people like Dan Pink,Jane McGonigal and many others. First we make our phrases, then we try to understand them...

Rome’s rebel lake is a parable of the contemporary commons | openDemocracy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Earlier this summer activists in Rome won the right to self-manage a vast lake in the city’s capital, effectively expropriating a private company from prime real estate. From marches and public debates to concerts and open dinners their campaign is an inspiring example of a rebel city at work.

Street Fight Daily: Amazon's Local Ambition, The On-Demand Obsession - Street Fight | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The recent launch of Amazon’s in-store credit card reader and checkout software was one of Jeff Bezos’ most deliberate acts to date to grab a slice of the 85 to 90 percent of total purchases that still happen in the physical world. But the people who know Amazon the best said it has far more ambitious plans in the offline world.

UNICEF updating Uganda's Digital Kiosk computing platform - Gizmag | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

For the past couple of years, UNICEF Uganda and partners have been designing, developing, prototyping and rolling out youth-focused community computers that can operate on mains power where available, or solar-power in remote rural areas. Work has just finished on the design of the second generation Digital Kiosk, and the UK's fanless computer specialist Aleutia is now working on a new open source, low power computer system to squeeze into the table-topped repurposed oil drum that will become the Digital Drum.

Why We're In A Golden Age of Global Investigative Journalism - Mother Jones

Why We're In A Golden Age of Global Investigative Journalism - Mother Jones | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In our world, the news about the news is often grim. Newspapers are shrinking, folding up, or being cut loose by their parent companies. Layoffs are up and staffsare down. That investigative reporter who covered the state capitol—she's not there anymore. Newspapers like the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and theChicago Tribune have suffered from multiple rounds of layoffs over the years. You know the story and it would be easy enough to imagine that it was the world's story as well. But despite a long run of journalistic tough times, the loss of advertising dollars, and the challenge of the Internet, there's been a blossoming of investigative journalism across the globe from Honduras to Myanmar, New Zealand to Indonesia.

Think the Sharing Economy Is Hot Now? This Will Turn the Temp up to Scorching - Huffington Post | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

You know the sharing economy has arrived in full bloom when Airbnb and Uber are mentioned as breathlessly -- and with as much controversy -- as Facebook once was. And when there is a two-day conference set up solely to discuss the implications of sharing, as there was in San Francisco this spring.

Sharing Economy Can Be An Opportunity, Too – Responsive.org

Sharing Economy Can Be An Opportunity, Too – Responsive.org | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

We know that young people are less interested in owning products, and are instead more interested in whatever services allow them to use the products when they need them. But why the freak out by retailers, when this could be viewed as a great opportunity? They should all be following the lead of companies like Warby Parker and Patagonia, who have each been able to offer great “sharing economy” options in addition to their normal line-up.

Get involved with the sharing economy!

Get involved with the sharing economy! | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Many of us acknowledge that something is deeply wrong with the economic model upon which we’ve built our society. This has been reflected by the widespread economic troubles of recent years, by the ever-widening income gap between the rich and the poor, and by the lack of opportunities available for youth. But there are some great things rising up out of the dust. One promising development is a shift toward a sharing economy, sometimes also called a peer-to-peer (P2P) economy. People are starting to trade their goods and services directly with each other, instead of accepting the terms of engagement of big business.

Peer-to-peer revolution — Challenging traditional capitalist business models | The Socialist Network

Peer-to-peer revolution — Challenging traditional capitalist business models | The Socialist Network | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

One could have long arguments over the exact definition of socialism if it’s posed as an abstract future-construction. However such a discussion will acquire different quality if we are to base it upon real processes which we can observe in the present reality which are already undermining and (or even outplacing in certain conditions) the established models.

jean lievens's insight:

Here's a short article I wrote back in february last year. forgot all about it + never scooped it. I also forgot to reply to the reply. But I take it back up soon…

Evgeny Morozov: How much for your data?

Oral-B, a Procter & Gamble company, this year launched its SmartSeries Bluetooth toothbrush — an essential appliance for what the firm calls “the well-connected bathroom”. It connects to your smartphone, where its app tracks brushing tasks (have you flossed? cleaned the tongue? rinsed?) and highlights areas of the mouth (visualised on the phone screen) that deserve more attention. More importantly, as the toothbrush’s website proudly announces, it also “records brushing activity as data that you can chart on your own and share with dental professionals.” What happens to that data — whether it goes to these dental professionals, or your insurance company, stays with you or is appended to your data already owned by Facebook and Google — is a controversial question.

How the web lost its way – and its founding principles - HITC

How the web lost its way – and its founding principles - HITC | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It showed which houses were connected to the town's water supply and which houses were occupied by black or white families. A mashup uses data from more than one source, usually publicly available information, and almost always presents it on a map. The results were extraordinary: the map showed that almost all the white households in Coal Run had water piped to their homes, while all but a few black households did not. Those without piped water had to carry water home from the water plant by whatever transport they could muster, pump it from wells contaminated with sulphur and oil from old mining operations or, in extremis, collect rainwater.
