Playing Nice: How the Sharing Economy Is Transforming Industry and Building Community

Playing Nice: How the Sharing Economy Is Transforming Industry and Building Community | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The Sharing Economy isn’t just about one-time experiences or interactions, it’s about a systemic transformation in the way we produce and consume. Neal Gorenflo, former market researcher turned sharing guru, will join us on the March CommunityMatters conference call to offer insights on the shift toward the Sharing Economy. Co-Founder and Publisher ofShareable Magazine, Neal recently collaborated with Latitude to develop a comprehensive report on the Sharing Economy. From responses to a web-based survey, the report found that three out of every four survey participants predicted that their own sharing of physical objects and spaces will increase in the next five years.

It is not exactly a new concept; marketplaces have been around since the dawn of time, when people met to trade goods. People still meet to trade goods in digital marketplaces aided by advanced technology.

Why Banning Uber Makes Seoul Even More of a Sharing City

Why Banning Uber Makes Seoul Even More of a Sharing City | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This past Monday Seoul City said it planned to ban Uber, the smartphone car-hailing service, and launch its own app for official taxis. Some reacted by calling Seoul’s sharing cred into question because, after all, Seoul is the self-proclaimed Sharing City with arguably the most ambitious sharing economy agenda of any city in the world.

The business behind Open Source | Dries Buytaert

A few days ago, I sat down with Quentin Hardy of The New York Times to talk Open Source. We spoke mostly about the Drupal ecosystem and how Acquiamakes money. As someone who spent almost his entire career in Open Source, I'm a firm believer in the fact that you can build a high-growth, high-margin business and help the community flourish. It's not an either-or proposition, and Acquia and Drupal are proof of that.

The power of Collective Wisdom

The power of Collective Wisdom | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

An intuitive and intelligent opinion could save someone’s life or bail the person out of never-ending trauma of an unresolved problem. However, presence of adequate intelligence quotient in the opinion is a must. In critical conditions, however, getting the right opinion or being sure that the opinion received is appropriate is nothing short of solving a tricky puzzle; you can’t be certain whether it is correct or not until you go right till the end and experience the outcome. One could consider taking a chance if the outcome is not so impactful, and could be reversed / discarded. But if the outcome could save a life, it has to be accurate and intelligent.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » The Exploitative Business Logics Behind the Sharing Economy

Uber made plenty of headlines during a huge winter storm in New York in December, when riders found themselves paying three times the normal price to hail a car in the middle of the snow and frozen rain. Uber founder Travis Kalanick defended the “surge pricing” as a way to provide an incentive to drivers to stay out on the streets; but to many riders, the experience didn’t feel a whole lot like sharing. And as I learned all too well when I tried to use AirBnB to find a room in Austin, Texas, during the SXSW festival last year, Austin’s AirBnB hosts weren’t a bunch of Good Samaritans looking to lend out their couches — they were cold hard capitalists dedicated to charge as much as the market could possibly bear.

How Small Business Can Leverage the Internet of Things - SYS-CON Media (press release)

How Small Business Can Leverage the Internet of Things - SYS-CON Media (press release) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In 1999, technology pioneer Kevin Ashton coined the phrase "Internet of Things" (IoT) to refer to theconcept of "connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from cell phones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of." The IoT can also encompass car and plane engines, gas and oil wells, fitness tracking devices, and thermostats. In a 2014 New York Timesarticle, writer Jeremy Rifkin stated, "Today more than 11 billion sensors are attached to natural resources, production lines, the electricity grid, logistics networks and recycling flows, and implanted in homes, offices, stores and vehicles, feeding big data into the Internet of Things. By 2020, it is projected that at least 50 billion sensors will connect to it." Although large companies and startup tech companies are the primary users right now, McKinsey Global Institute estimates that the IoT business will deliver $6.2 trillion in revenue by 2025.

Commons-based peer production | LifeSun

Commons-based peer production | LifeSun | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Commons-based peer production is a term coined by Harvard Law School professor Yochai Benkler. It describes a new model of socio-economic production in which the creative energy of large numbers of people is coordinated into large, meaningful projects mostly without traditional hierarchical organization. These projects are often, but not always, conceived without financial compensation for contributors. The term is often used interchangeably with the term social production.

Clay Shirky: What I Learned About Creativity By Watching Creatives - PSFK | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In this video of his talk at PSFK CONFERENCE NYC, Clay Shirky talks about the work of Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. After working there as an assistant professor for almost ten years, Shirky describes five student projects that he thinks are pushing the creative boundaries – from interface design to how people cluster to build new work. At the end of the talk, the technology thought-leader compares creatives as members of a philharmonic orchestra and wonders if any rules can be drawn from looking at such an ensemble.
