What's the Deal with Copyright and 3D Printing? | Public Knowledge

3D printing provides an opportunity to change the way we think about the world around us. [1] It merges the physical and the digital. People on opposite sides of the globe can collaborate on designing an object and print out identical prototypes every step of the way. Instead of purchasing one of a million identical objects built in a faraway factory, users can customize pre-designed objects and print them out at home. Just as computers have allowed us to become makers of movies, writers of articles, and creators of music, 3D printers allow everyone to become creators of things.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Essay: Towards a Participatory Market Society

“Despite all our great advances in science, technology and financial innovations, many soci- eties today are struggling with a financial, economic and public spending crisis, over-regulation, and mass unemployment, as well as lack of sustainability and innovation. Can we still rely on conventional economic thinking or do we need a new approach? Is our economic system under- going a fundamental transformation? Are our theories still doing a good job with just a few exceptions, or do they work only for “good weather” but not for “market storms”? Can we fix existing theories by adapting them a bit, or do we need a fundamentally different approach? These are the kind of questions that will be addressed in this paper. I argue that, as the complexity of socio-economic systems increases, networked decision- making and bottom-up self-regulation will be more and more important features.

Mutual Development Principles

Mutual Development Principles | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Mutual Development arises from observations as to the state of the Development Industry and the problems it causes. Especially with respect to Money and it’s use in social empowerment. Short summary – Money fucks up everything in this context, at least when coming from external and non sustainable resources. Money creates artificial inequality, without guaranteeing meaningful contribution. It creates dependencies, with inevitably lead to collapse or hindrance to projects upon the withdrawal of funds. Anyway, enough bitching, I’m trying to create a positive provocation. “Experts” are also problematic, I addressed this in the first post.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » P2P Trendfest (6): User-Generated Urbanism

“The traditional model of city-making has historically involved experts with a definitive, long-term plan executed over time. The issue with that is that culture changes faster than infrastructure; we’ve surpassed our ability to keep up. One of the consequences is that we’re left living in cities we planned 50 to 60 years ago.”

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Limiting Noise | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Noise is another telling example of the failure of growth. All through the nineteenth and twentieth century, the middle class tried to move to quieter neighborhoods by moving to lower density suburbs. Until World War I, they succeeded: from the walking city to the streetcar suburb, middle-class neighborhoods did become pleasanter and quieter. But during the twentieth century, so many new sources of noise appeared that modern suburbia is noisier than the much denser streetcar suburbs were one hundred years ago.

Testimony of Equality - P2P Foundation

Testimony of Equality - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"A testimony of equality is an act, usage, or course of conduct by a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) tending to assert or promote equality of persons, arising from the Friends' belief that all people are equal in the eyes of God. The word testimony describes the way that Friends testify or bear witness to their beliefs in their everyday life. A testimony is therefore not a belief, but is committed action arising out of Friends' religious experience. Testimony of equality has included Quakers' participating in actions that promote the equality of the sexes and races, as well as other classifications of people." ResPublica | Think Tank | Phillip Blond | Big Society | Government policy | It’s The ‘Common Good’ Economy, Stupid | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In the wake of economic and financial meltdown politicians from all parties have been eager to offer new models of capitalism ranging from the ‘responsible’ to the ‘popular’.  As has been recently noted in the media, Catholic Social Teaching (CST) has a lot to contribute to the debate about the nature of capitalism, values and the market place.  Informed by our experiences of working with local partners and communities in the Global South, a reflection on CST principles as well as our own analysis of the current economic debate we are in the process of developing three concepts - purpose, participation and political communities - that we think need to be at the heart of any new approach to capitalism and the economy.

Jeremy Scahill: Leaked U.S. Terrorist Watchlist Rulebook Reveals "Global Stop and Frisk Program"

Jeremy Scahill: Leaked U.S. Terrorist Watchlist Rulebook Reveals "Global Stop and Frisk Program" | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The Obama administration has expanded the national terrorist watchlist system by approving broad guidelines over who can be targeted. A leaked copy of the secret government guidebook reveals that to be deemed a "terrorist" target, "irrefutable evidence or concrete facts are not necessary." Both "known" and "suspected" suspects are tracked, and terrorism is so broadly defined that it includes people accused of damaging property belonging to the government or financial institutions. Other factors that can justify inclusion on the watchlist include postings on social media or having a relative already deemed a terrorist. We are joined by investigative reporters Jeremy Scahill and Ryan Devereaux of The Intercept. Last week they published the secret U.S. document along with their new article, "The Secret Government Rulebook for Labeling You a Terrorist."

The amazing world of alternative currencies: a list of 8 “different” coins

The amazing world of alternative currencies: a list of 8 “different” coins | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Since we’ve created money, we also have invented ways of replacing it with other forms of currency, whether it’s because we don’t fully trust fiat currency or because we love the idea of having choices. Bitcoin is the perfect mix of these two valid explanations and, like our favourite virtual coin, a lot of alternative currencies have lives, prospered and (sometimes) ended after providing a lifetime of joy to their users. Let’s take a look at some of these “different” currencies.

In the ACS journal Langmuir, scientists are reporting new understanding about the dynamics of 3-D bioprinting that takes them a step closer to realizing their goal of making working tissues and organs on-demand.
