Five reasons why the new capitalism must be ethical | P2P Foundation

Five reasons why the new capitalism must be ethical | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
“We are, it would seem, in the midst of a historical crisis of the capitalist system. As the dynamo effects of the sub-prime collapse ripple through the economy, from financial markets to consumer spending and industrial production, it has become common to point at how our present capitalist system lacks long-term sustainability. If this used to be the privilege of a handful of left-leaning economists like André Gunder Frank (2005) or Robert Brenner (2004), economists, politicians and business leaders who used to be more than happy with the existing order of things have now joined the ranks. Even Richard Florida, whose theories of the ‘creative class’ stood at the heart of the gentrification-driven real estate boom that preceded the present crisis now proclaims that ‘[t]he housing bubble was the ultimate expression, and perhaps the last gasp, of an economic system some 80 years in the making, and now well past its “sell-by date” (Florida, 2009:9).

Meet the Central Texas Ladies of Bitcoin, Women Pioneering the Crypto Space ... - Bitcoin Magazine | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Central Texas has always been a hotbed of progressive thought and action. It is currently one of the most thriving Bitcoin meccas on the planet. This is evident by the large number of Bitcoin-centric businesses in the area, the Bitcoin-heavy media (The Liberty BeatThe Crypto ShowNatural News) , and the nationwide Bitcoin speakers and advocates who reside in the area (Cody Wilson, John Bush, Myself). This is in addition to the growing number of Bitcoin-friendly businesses in the area, many of which are run by women.

Philosophical Disquisitions: Procedural Due Process and the Dangers of Predictive Analytics

Philosophical Disquisitions: Procedural Due Process and the Dangers of Predictive Analytics | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
I am really looking forward to Frank Pasquale’s new book The Black Box Society: The Secret Algorithms that Control Money and Information. The book looks to examine and critique the ways in which big data is being used to analyse, predict and control our behaviour. Unfortunately, it is not out until January 2015. In the meantime, I’m trying to distract myself with some of Pasquale’s previously published material.

Shared Machine Shops / The Journal of Peer Production | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Despite the marketing clangour of the “maker movement”, shared machine shops are currently “fringe phenomena” since they play a minor role in the production of wealth, knowledge, political consensus and the social organisation of life. Interestingly, however, they also prominently share the core transformations experienced in contemporary capitalism. The convergence of work, labour and other aspects of life — the rapid development of algorithmically driven technical systems and their intensifying role in social organisation — the practical and legitimation crisis of institutions, echoed by renewed attempts at self-organisation.

Is there any Internet Governance out there? - LSE Media Policy Project (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This year has seen significant developments in internet governance, including the Brazilian government’s attempt to create a truly multistakeholder global process in the wake of the Snowden revelations, and the US government’s announcement of its intention to transition domain name functions to the global multistakeholder community. Andrew Puddephatt, executive director of Global Partners Digital, spoke at a seminar last week organised by the LSE Media Policy Project, the International Institute of Communications, and the Internet Society, on upcoming challenges in this area.

When Money Dies: Germany And Fiat Money After 1910 - ValueWalk

When Money Dies: Germany And Fiat Money After 1910 - ValueWalk | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The story of the destruction of the German mark during the hyper-inflation of Weimar Germany from 1919 to its horrific peak in November 1923 is usually dismissed as a bizarre anomaly in the economic history of the twentieth century. But no episode better illustrates the dire consequences of unsound money or makes a more devastating, real-life case against fiat-currency: where there is no restraint, monetary death will follow.

You Are Not the Product: The Coming Revolution in Social Networks

You Are Not the Product: The Coming Revolution in Social Networks | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
This idea that we are just products for advertisers pops up in lots of online conversations, a reflection of the current state of our advertising-driven social networks. These networks were built on TV’s old business model of “I sell your eyeballs and give you interesting stuff to watch in exchange.” They’ve just modified that model a bit so that now, in addition to attention, we also surrender our personal data. Oh, and now we’re the ones supplying most of that “interesting stuff” to watch.

I'm a Luddite! | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
I’ve a long time felt that I’m different, actually from I was a child. I remember how I reacted with anger when the road outside our house was paved, I think I was about 7 years at that time. Today I hate the view of cars, power lines, the sound of fans and so on. My cell phone has buttons, probably they still make a few just for old people, but touch screens are against my nature. I use the old laptops after my brother. Just to mention some.
