Another World Social Forum is possible The road to the WSF 2013 ... | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

For those who have not had the time or resources to attend the World Social Forum 2013 preparatory meeting in Monastir (July 12-17, 2012), it was not easy to stay informed about the progress and outcomes. Meanwhile, thanks to some participants who live-streamed and recorded the entire event on video, transcripts of the sessions are being made available on the web. [1] Deciphering these notes from Monastir certainly doesn’t give a comprehensive picture of the current state of the WSF process, but at least it offers us a first impression: a very raw and chaotic mixture of statements, proposals, concerns and critical questions in Spanish, French and English (interventions in Arab are to be translated), reflecting both the precarity and the potential of the WSF.

Economics for Orcs: how can virtual world economies inform national economies and those who design them? | The Policy and Internet Blog

Economics for Orcs: how can virtual world economies inform national economies and those who design them? | The Policy and Internet Blog | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
What can ‘real’ economies and the economists who run them learn from these virtual economies? How can a focus on social fabric -- rather than just on efficiency and output –usefully inform national economies? OII Research Fellow Vili Lehdonvirta discusses his new book from MIT Press (with E.Castronova): Virtual Economies: Design and Analysis. It aims to bring virtual economies to the attention of social scientists, and secondly to help digital designers use social science and economics scholarship when designing their virtual economies.

CryptoKids: Altcoins, Apps And Authors Aim To Bring Bitcoin To Children | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

While most adults may still be baffled by bitcoin and bemused by blockchains, a new generation is being introduced to this alternative form of finance by advocates aiming to bring about a “digital currency revolution”. Their belief is that our current financial system can be overthrown by those who don’t even yet have bank accounts.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Essay: Grassroots Sustainable Community-Based Enterprise in India

“The case of the jasmine flower growers in coastal Karnataka is an example of a local successful grassroots enterprise that has proved robust for over 70 years. The aim of this research is to examine the history, mechanisms, interconnectedness, and success of the jasmine growing program in coastal Karnataka and assess its compatibility with the community-based enterprise (CBE) model as proposed by Peredo and Chrisman [Peredo, A.M., and J.J. Chrisman. 2006. Toward a theory of community-based enterprise. Academy of Management Review 31, no. 2: 309–28]. We found that the existence of a natural, autonomously developed CBE without ‘western’ intervention can help to fine tune our knowledge of sustainable CBE and assist in helping practitioners learn what works and what does not when proposing a CBE.”

Five principles for regulating the peer production economy | R Street Institute | Free Markets. Real Solutions. | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Economic history over the last 200 years is largely the story of the industrial move from small-scale domestic production and piece work to systems dominated by economies of scale: factories, big businesses and multi-national corporations. But over just the past two decades, new technologies have radically altered this trend, disaggregating physical assets in space and time and employing digital platforms that allow for more individually tailored pricing, matching and exchange. Changes in the way we communicate and transact business have reduced economies of scale in some industries, shifting value to producers who have access to distributed capital.

Most Activist Groups Actually Suck at Online Fundraising. Here's How To Change That - Inside Philanthropy: Fundraising Intelligence - Inside Philanthropy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As for the strengths of the social justice crowd, let's be frank here: Innovation is not one of them. The nonprofit world is a comparatively languid sector where groups don't easily get put out of business because they failed to stay ahead of fast-moving disruptive forces. Everyone feels that gun to their head when it comes to raising money and making a difference, but not when it comes to innovating. Spend your whole career in this sector, as many people do, and you're probably not so quick to grab onto the next big thing.

Lessons of DIY Urbanism in a Syrian Refugee Camp

Lessons of DIY Urbanism in a Syrian Refugee Camp | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Governments are so accustomed to dictating their will, through coercion if necessary, that they find it unimaginable that people might willingly – and with creativity and enthusiasm – self-organize themselves to take care of urgent needs.  So pause a moment to behold the remarkable Zaatari Refugee camp in Jordan.  This settlement of 85,000 displaced Syrians is showing how even desperate, resource-poor people can show enormous creativity and self-organization, and turn their “camp” into a “city.”

The amazing world of alternative currencies: a list of 8 “different” coins

The amazing world of alternative currencies: a list of 8 “different” coins | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Since we’ve created money, we also have invented ways of replacing it with other forms of currency, whether it’s because we don’t fully trust fiat currency or because we love the idea of having choices. Bitcoin is the perfect mix of these two valid explanations and, like our favourite virtual coin, a lot of alternative currencies have lives, prospered and (sometimes) ended after providing a lifetime of joy to their users. Let’s take a look at some of these “different” currencies.
