Digital natives’ stake in the Networked Society - The Networked Society Blog | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The number of digital natives is growing. By 2020, there will be approximately 4.25 billion ‘digital natives’ under the age of 34. The number of ‘net experienced’ people in the aging part of the population is also growing – what will this mean for the Networked Society?

Degrowth 2014 - Michel Bauwens on The Transition to a Sustainable Commons Society - YouTube

Degrowth will only be possible by changing the artificial scarcity-based design practices and engineering of the for-profit sector and by removing the incentive to externalize the true production costs in terms of matter and energy. A commons-oriented approach should combine global open design based in communities, local on-demand distributed manufacturing, and the use of renewable distributed energy. Along with changes in governance and ownership, it can contribute to a global phase transition.

You Are Asking The Wrong Questions About Education Technology - Forbes

You Are Asking The Wrong Questions About Education Technology - Forbes | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Education technology is trendy. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t read an article or have a conversation in which someone makes the familiar argument that “education is the one industry that hasn’t embraced the technologies of the 21st Century.” The world has changed–so the story goes–and while business has adapted, school hasn’t.

When Wolfgang Lehmann started university in Germany in the 1980s, he felt like he didn't belong. As the son of a tradesman and a letter carrier, Lehmann was the first to go onto higher education in his family. But despite hard work, financial stress forced him to drop out in his first year.

The future is in how fast you are at unlearning. - Innovation Excellence (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Through our education, from kindergarten to grad school, then through our professional lives, we have been shaped in the same mold, even though we hear here and there that we need to “think outside the box”, that box being only aimed to fit into a bigger box, like the Russian dolls. Conventionalism, risk aversion and complacency kill innovation and entrepreneurship.

Opinion: From neighbor to network, relationships changed | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Consider what a remarkable shift that represents. "Townshipped" society – where communities of people with different skills and interests, disparate concerns and values, collaborated with their neighbors in the pursuit of the common good – lasted from the 1700s through most of the 20th century. Townshipped architecture served as the underpinning for colonial villages, frontier towns, and the urban neighborhoods like the Avondale where my father was raised.

Think back 15 years ago, if you are old enough to remember, when the internet was in its infancy and the possibilities endless. The possibilities still may be endless, but the world has changed. The internet, as a technological backbone, has changed our every day lives in ways we never could have imagined in 1999. The companies who were first to embrace the internet are the ones who are leaders in today’s business world.

Big-data management promises a significant shift in the way decisions are made across the economy. Abundant new sources of data from the web, sensors and smartphones, mined for patterns and insights by smart software, will mean that more and more decisions will be based on data and analysis rather than experience and intuition.

How Medieval-Style Guilds Will Remake the Tech Behind Facebook and Google | WIRED

How Medieval-Style Guilds Will Remake the Tech Behind Facebook and Google | WIRED | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Drawing on a practice that dates back to medieval times, a guild is a group of craftspeople or merchants who’ve banded together because they all do the same thing. One guild is for vintners, another for masons, and so on. There are hundreds of guilds across England, Pearce says, and each provides a way for craftspeople to share certain tricks of their craft. The members of a guild come together, he explains, to “figure out how best to run their trades,” to hone their operations in ways they couldn’t hone them on their own.

Florida Makes Off-Grid Living Illegal – Mandates All Homes Must Be Connected To An Electricity Grid | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
It’s no secret that an opposition to sustainable living exists. Earlier this year, Texas state brought several SWAT teams to a sustainable community and threatened to shut it down. Each one of the community members were initially handcuffed at gunpoint. It was called “The Garden of Eden Community,” and was totally self sustainable. You can read more about that here.

Silicon Valley’s Contract-Worker Problem

Silicon Valley’s Contract-Worker Problem | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Earlier this year, I hired a house cleaner. I wouldn't have done so normally, but my place was a mess, I was busy at work, and I saw an offer on Facebook that looked too good to be true — a San Francisco start-up called Homejoy was offering home cleanings in the Bay Area for $19. (Not $19 per room or $19 per hour. Just $19.) So I booked an appointment through Homejoy's website, and a day later, a young man showed up at my door.

Geek Culture is Smart and Creative - NYTimes.com

Geek Culture is Smart and Creative - NYTimes.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Geek culture’s growing mainstream impact is often attributed to the rise of wealth in the information technology sector. That may be partially true, but misses what’s attractive in the first place about this culture for young geeks, who are often maligned as socially inept misfits clinging to each other in low-status huddles. However, rather than desperation, many young people are positively drawn to geek culture for something that is harder and harder to find in mainstream culture: the joy of making things.

Launching of the “P2P and Innovation” magazine in Brazil | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
“The first issue of the “P2P and Innovation” (“Revista P2P & INOVAÇÃO”) magazine in Brazil has just been launched. The magazine brings together eight articles, which are the result of the course Michel Bauwens, founder of the P2P Foundation, ministered in Brazil in November 2012. During the course – made possible through a partnership between the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) – Bauwens discussed with the students the collaborative practices around the world based on open knowledge, peer production and the commons.
