Mondragon - P2P Foundation

Mondragon - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"The Mondragón co-ops avoid this degeneration by separating ownership, which varies in value, from voting, which is strictly equal. Instead of buying stock, new applicants advance labor to pay the membership fee. Roughly a year's salary, this loan by members starts an "individual capital account" (ICA) to which monthly and year-end profits and losses are credited or debited. (Thomas & Logan 1982, p. 136) Unlike stock shares, ICAs are neither accumulable nor sellable and carry only one vote. Being both individually recoupable upon leaving yet available meanwhile for collective investment, they constitute a sort of bank inside each co-op. Rights attach solely to membership and terminate when members retire or leave. There being no non-worker owners, co-ops remain whole solely in the hands of their active workforces, avoiding the Rochdale error. A co-op could be sold, but only by a hard-to-muster two-thirds of a general assembly vote, and this has never happened.

Collaborative Platforms Empower Citizens To Shape Their Communities [My Ideal City] | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Participatory online platforms and visual tools are lowering the barriers to participation and empowering citizens to design their communities. These crowd planning systems facilitate an open dialogue between city agencies and the people they serve, establishing a structured process for collaboration and encouraging a higher level of participation at the civic level. By seeking input throughout the development process, these crowd-planned systems help ensure greater transparency and buy-in that ultimately results in an end solution that meets the actual needs of the population.

NASA is funding a 3D food printer, and it'll start with pizza

NASA is funding a 3D food printer, and it'll start with pizza | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

NASA is funding research into 3D-printed food. As Quartz reveals, Mechanical engineer Anjan Contractor received a $125,000 grant from the agency to build a prototype 3D printer with the aim of automating food creation. It's hoped the system could provide astronauts food during long-distance space travel, but its creator has the loftier aim of solving the increasing food shortages around the world by cutting down on waste. The software for the printer will be open-source, while the hardware is based on the open-source RepRap Mendel 3D printer.

A Practical Utopian’s Guide to the Coming Collapse | David Graeber | The Baffler

A Practical Utopian’s Guide to the Coming Collapse | David Graeber | The Baffler | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

What is a revolution? We used to think we knew. Revolutions were seizures of power by popular forces aiming to transform the very nature of the political, social, and economic system in the country in which the revolution took place, usually according to some visionary dream of a just society. Nowadays, we live in an age when, if rebel armies do come sweeping into a city, or mass uprisings overthrow a dictator, it’s unlikely to have any such implications; when profound social transformation does occur—as with, say, the rise of feminism—it’s likely to take an entirely different form. It’s not that revolutionary dreams aren’t out there. But contemporary revolutionaries rarely think they can bring them into being by some modern-day equivalent of storming the Bastille.

The 20 commandmants of online safety - gulfnews.com

Enabled by the sharing culture on social media and with ever more sophisticated malicious software known as malware at their disposal cybercriminals have become far more adept at crafting attacks and targeting individuals and organisations. Phishing emails purporting to be from friends, often reflecting our interests perhaps gleaned from social media sites or from trusted organisations such as your bank or HM Revenue Customs encourage us to click on infected links or attachments containing malware. (A recent example of the latter was malware disguised as a security warning from Microsoft’s digital crimes unit.) “We have a level of trust in certain organisations and criminals exploit that trust,” says Sidaway.

Adoption of Massive Open Online Courses [Worldwide Survey] - Huffington Post (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Is higher education widening the gap between the rich and the poor? A 2011 surveyindicated that 35 percent college admission directors are increasing their efforts to find "full pay" students instead of low-income students. Given the rise of tuitions, can technology like massively open online courses (MOOCs) reduce tuition costs and make education more affordable? Many argue the answer is yes.

Open data economy: Eight business models for open data and insight from Deloitte UK - O'Reilly Radar | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Michele Osella, a researcher and business analyst in the Business Model & Policy Innovation Unit at the Istituto Superiore Mario Boella in Italy, wrote in to share examples of emerging business models based upon the research I cited in my post in December. His email reminded me that in Europe, open data is often discussed in the context of public sector information (PSI). Ongoing case studies of re-use are available at the European Public Sector Information Platform website.

What are the effects of RelayRides' New York cease and desist? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Last week, the car-sharing marketplace RelayRides got hit with a cease and desistletter from the New York State Department of Financial Services for allegedly violating insurance law and false advertising. RelayRides, which lets car owners rent out their vehicles to strangers instead of letting their cars go unused, has suspended its service in the state indefinitely. The company says its customers will not be financially responsible if a renter gets in an accident, but the DFS says customers can still be held accountable.
