Pessimism won't do. We need an energy revolution - The Guardian

Pessimism won't do. We need an energy revolution - The Guardian | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The interesting thing about energy policy, as it comes into focus for the start of manifesto season, is that it gives each party the chance to be dreadful in its own unique way. The Conservatives are going with the line that bills are too high (they are), this is because of Labour’s high taxes (it isn’t), and can be rectified by “slashing green levies”. This is their offer: it makes very little financial difference (an average of £50 a year) and no demands on energy companies except to simplify their bills. It looks like a lot of bluster about the “mess they inherited” paired with some ineffectual flapping.

The twilight of neoliberalism: can popular struggles create new worlds from below? - Open Democracy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In our new book We Make Our Own History: Marxism and Social Movements in the Twilight of Neoliberalism we condense four decades of research and activism into an argument about how ordinary people can understand the nature of the world we live in and find ways to push beyond the neoliberal orthodoxy of the last few decades.

As the Sharing Economy Matures, Should You Rent or Buy? - Big Think | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Born out of the Great Recession, when people needed new ways to make and save money, the sharing economy has expanded from DVD rentals to include dresses, handbags, cars, pets, drones, children's toys, etc. More than an economic reality, the sharing economy is a sign of the times, suggesting that the individual consumerism that has powered the American economy may be shifting. Boston College sociology professor Juliet Schor, who studies the sharing economy, said:

Tech kingpins: Your kit would be tastier with a spot of open source - Register | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In today's world, tin is not the differentiator and they need to compete head-on with open source – which might mean they have to take a more open-source type approach. Of course, they will argue that they have been moving this way with some of their products for some time, but said products have tended to be outside of their key infrastructure market.

Enhancing Virtues: Caring (part 2) - Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It may be that developing our capacity for empathy is the key to surviving the myriad threats of the 21st century, from war to climate change, as Jeremy Rifkin argued in his 2009 book The Empathetic Civilization[1] and Julian Savulescu and Ingmar Persson argued in their 2012 Unfit for the Future: The Need for Moral Enhancement[2]. Indeed, the growth of civilization over the last tens of thousands of years may have both both depended on, and selected for, the growth of empathy.

How I Unfriended 4000 Facebook Friends Strategy

So I’d lived with 5000 friends pounding my feed with information on Facebook since 2009. With Facebooks new changes its become obvious quality is respected over quantity. I set out to find how many people actually “listen” too me and turns out after 5 years it was only about 1000 people that where friends with me. That meant 4000 people needed to go. There is no good way to do it but here is the most efficient way I found. Dont make the same mistakes I did by adding every one and everything. Many were added back when social media was a wild new frontier.

Hima: An Islamic Tradition of the Commons | On the Commons | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A glance at history turns up the names of many heroes—from Robin Hood to Chief Joseph to Gandhi—who stood up to protect the commons on behalf of future generations. One name from history not likely to be associated with the commons is Muhammad. Yet the holy prophet of the Islamic world sought to preserve special landscapes for everyone. Today, Muslim environmentalists are trying to reinvigorate this tradition.

Supply chains are becoming ever more tightly integrated as corporations vie with each other to bring their products to global markets before they lose their value through replication or obsolescence. This restructuring of supply chains involves the interaction of a range of different public and private, local and global actors, including companies involved in ‘knowledge-based’ activities as well as those producing and shipping material goods. Both intellectual and manual labour are implicated in these processes of consolidation and acceleration and feel the squeeze:  in intensification of work, the precarisation of working conditions and the fragmentation of the workforce, raising challenges for the organisation and representation of labour. This volume brings together accounts of what is happening to logistical labour along global supply chains with theoretical discussions of the problematic relationship between the ‘knowledge-based’ and real economies, and material and immaterial labour. It also presents research on other dimensions of labour precariousness, with contributions from Europe, Asia and the Americas. This volume makes important contributions in the fields of political economy, geography and labour sociology.

The sharing economy is a ploy for the commodification of everything | P2P Foundation

The sharing economy is a ploy for the commodification of everything | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Some technology critics, with their laments of cultural decline enabled by Twitter and e-books, are partly to blame. Instead of engaging with attention and distraction socio-economically — as was done with earlier media by Walter Benjamin and Sigfried Kracauer — we get Nicholas Carr, with his embrace of neuroscience, or Douglas Rushkoff, with his biophysiological critique of acceleration (8). Whatever the salience of such interventions, they end up decoupling the technological from the economic, so that we end up debating how the screens of our iPads condition the cognition of our brains — instead of debating how the information gathered by our iPhones conditions the austerity measures of our governments. To be critical of technology today should mean questioning how it and its boosters let the current system buy more time, and stave off an even more existential crisis.
