Virtually everything: How the physical world is being consumed by software ... - The Next Web

Virtually everything: How the physical world is being consumed by software ... - The Next Web | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

With the progress of time, and the advances in technology which that brought, we saw a shift – a device wasn’t just a machine any more, or rather a machine was sometimes more than one device. Often prompted by the Open-Source-brew-it-yourself movement there was a change from dedication of all the resources of a device to a single function to excess capability of a device being used to achieve another function.

When cloud formations take physical shape, neither their scale nor duration has an upper bound: We may begin to see cloud towns, then cloud cities, and ultimately cloud countries. At first this sounds rather implausible. Perhaps the internet will spur a wave of internal migrations as online communities begin gathering in person -- but could this process really lead to a new city, or country?

Why Software Is Eating The World - Forbes

“Irrelevant,” was one curious reaction. “You’re talking software development. Our business is very different. That sort of thing just isn’t possible in our field. Everything here moves much more slowly.” This ignores the fact that most firms’ core systems and processes arealready run on software. It also overlooks the prospect that within a few years, almost all business will be digitized and run on software. The Power of Algorithms: How software formats the culture | CCCB LAB

The Power of Algorithms: How software formats the culture | CCCB LAB | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The use of the Internet has spread further than computers and beyond the bounds of any specific discipline, and has come to permeate the texture of our reality and every aspect of our daily lives. The ways in which we relate to each other, obtain information, make decisions… that is, the ways in which we experience and learn about our surroundings, are increasingly mediated by the information systems that underlie the net. Massive amounts of information are generated by this constant interaction, and the only way to manage this data is through automated processing using algorithms. A humanist understanding of how this ‘algorithmic medium’ has evolved and how we interact with it is essential in order to ensure that citizens and institutions continue to play an active role in shaping our culture.
