The Peer-to-Peer Economy - A Turning Point in Human History - Walden Labs

The Peer-to-Peer Economy - A Turning Point in Human History - Walden Labs | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

When most people hear this type of “internet revolution” talk these days, their tendency is to roll their eyes and go on with their day. After all, we’ve been hearing about this revolution since the dawn of the World Wide Web, when the buzzword “Information Superhighway” was drilled into our heads ad nauseum by any number of now-laughable news segments, infomercials and tutorials. But here we are two decades later and we’re still working long hours, still struggling to make ends meet, still struggling to send our kids to college and still struggling to afford a few weeks vacation a year.

This Peer-to-Peer economy that is rising up to replace the Industrial/Information economy is difficult to see in its totality, but is everywhere around us.

Post-Capitalism: Rise of the Collaborative Commons — Medium

Post-Capitalism: Rise of the Collaborative Commons — Medium | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This article is a follow-up to The Obsolescence of Capitalism: And the Transition to a Resource Based Economywhich examined the effects of ongoing social and technological trends on the capitalist economic system, and the potential for humanity to restructure society and move from a system of scarcity to one of global abundance. While the previous article presented a long-term vision for transitioning towards an alternative Resource Based Economy of abundance, this article will examine the more immediate conditions affecting society and how, over the coming years and decades, the capitalist market will increasingly be eclipsed, circumvented and overshadowed by an emerging Collaborative Commons.

Envisioning the Post-Capitalist Economy - Hiroshi Onishi

Professor Hiroshi Onishi of Keio University's Faculty of Economics is working to break new ground in in mathematical Marxian economics.
Marxian economics can be split broadly into two fields: the theory of surplus value, which studies the problem of exploitation under capitalism, and historical materialism, which studies capitalism as a transient social system in the context of human history.
Professor Onishi's work in this area entails the mathematical modeling of changes in social systems from feudalism to capitalism, and then on to post-capitalist society.

Peer production: a force for radical social change? | Department of Sociology

As a firm believer in both the desirability of and possibility for radical social change, I am often confronted with heavy doses of scepticism and doubt on the part of those willing to discuss the matter with me. Questions like ‘So what’s the alternative?’ or comments such as ‘That sounds like a nice idea, but is it not utopian?’ abound. There are many avenues I could take to provide an answer. I could, for example, point out the fact that capitalism is still a system whose development into a dominant economic and social form would have bemused many in the midst of the feudal age. I could also emphasise the frequent waves of disenchantment expressed by individuals in capitalist societies through their recurrent protests, e.g. Alter-globalisation movement and Occupy Wall Street, and the anti-capitalist spirit many of them have embodied. Here, however, I wish to concentrate my attention on another set of tendencies, to be found in the ‘anti-capitalist potential of information technology’ (Wright 2010: 194).

The Rise of Anti-Capitalism

The Rise of Anti-Capitalism | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
WE are beginning to witness a paradox at the heart of capitalism, one that has propelled it to greatness but is now threatening its future: The inherent dynamism of competitive markets is bringing costs so far down that many goods and services are becoming nearly free, abundant, and no longer subject to market forces. While economists have always welcomed a reduction in marginal cost, they never anticipated the possibility of a technological revolution that might bring those costs to near zero.

Money and Paths to a Post-Capitalist Society | heteconomist

Money and Paths to a Post-Capitalist Society | heteconomist | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

While reading today, a couple of things jumped out at me that hold relevance for my previous post on fiat money and capital. One was a passage in the The Great Transformation by Karl Polanyi. The other was an observation by David Graeber in an interesting article in the Guardian. Thanks to Tom Hickey and Matt Franko for drawing my attention to Graeber’s article. In considering a few of the issues raised, this post is really just exploratory. I think the topic is important, but my thinking is only at an early stage.

Beware The Pretty People

Beware The Pretty People | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Capitalism won’t be violently overthrown. Nor should it be. Whatever system(s) may one day supplant it will instead grow quietly in the shadows of its tallest towers, and coexist for years. But in order for that to happen, I believe we need our true iconoclasts, dangerous freethinkers, and weird subversives to flock to the tech industry — rather than recoil from it in disgust, now that the pretty people have invaded.

Is the Digital Economy Still a Capitalist Economy? - Huffington Post

Is the Digital Economy Still a Capitalist Economy? - Huffington Post | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Too bad the term "socialism" was appropriated by Karl Marx, because it would be an apt description of today's emerging social economy. The social media revolution is transforming the way we create wealth, work, learn, play, raise our children, and probably even the way we think. A billion people use social media daily. We have social networking, social business, social government, social entertainment, and social everything. Today's hottest concepts are social: collective intelligence, mass collaboration, crowd sourcing, and collaborative innovation.
