A 'Complicated' look at teens and technology - Los Angeles Times | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Dr. danah boyd (she prefers to style her name in lowercase letters) is a cutting-edge scholar of technology (at Microsoft Research Center, New York University, and Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society) and a youth advocate with the daunting research skills of an anthropologist and the political zeal of an activist. Her first book, "It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens" (Yale University Press: 296 pp., $25), proves she is a writer and thinker in a category of her own invention.

Why Millennials Are Immature, Entitled and the Best Hire - Reuters

As it has been pointed out countless times in the media and through anecdotes, millennials in the workplace feel entitled to undeserved promotions and raises, are addicted to their smartphones and job hop every few years. The litany of complaints goes on, but of course no generation is as bad -- or as good -- as reported: Generation X was more than just a bunch of slackers and Baby Boomers' strengths shook off their juvenile delinquent label.

Did the Great Recession of 2008 Create a Generation of Progressives? - Houston Press (blog)

Did the Great Recession of 2008 Create a Generation of Progressives? - Houston Press (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

So now we have a generation, mostly Millenials, who suffered through the Great Recession -- many are still suffering -- and this is going to affect how they vote in future elections. Even a small effect of 10-15 percent could rock the electoral landscape. Given the closeness of presidential elections since 2000, as the older voters who tend to lean conservative pass away are replaced with, say, 5-8 percent of the electorate that is solidly Democratic (those who saw their ideological leanings shaped by the Great Recession) then there may well be a new Democratic hegemony for another generation.

Workplace 2020: Sourcing Talent for the Workplace of the Future - Wired | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Digital natives are entering the workforce en masse, and by 2020 many of the old school, pen and paper types will be on the way out. The relationship between employee and employer is also changing. If you want folks to stick around you’d better at least match the kind of tools and technology on the job that they have access to at home. Pair this relentless consumer-grade expectation for mobile, social and globally accessible tools with ubiquitous access to work, and you can see the perfect storm that is challenging HR and IT leaders to deploy technology solutions to attract, retain and manage their workforce while creating a collaborative, engaging employee experience.

8 Indisputable Reasons For Why We Don't Need Offices - Forbes

8 Indisputable Reasons For Why We Don't Need Offices - Forbes | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Looking back a decade or so ago it was absolutely essential to have an office, or more likely, a cubicle. That’s where we had meetings, saw our coworkers, and just got work done. But today do we really need corporate offices?  New technologies allow us to “connect to work,” meaning that all we need to get work done is an internet connection.  Employees are working from co-working spots, cafes, and home offices all over the world without ever having to step foot into a corporate office.  In fact the 2013 Regus Global Economic Indicatorof 26,000 business managers across 90 countries, revealed that 48% of them are now working remotely for at least half of their work-week.

If you want to understand what’s happening in business and culture today, the tail end of the Agrarian Age offers several telling clues, according to Don Tapscott, co-author of “Wikinomics.” Monday morning, Don delivered the opening keynote at HR Technology Conference & Expo. He covered much ground—much like his book does. And the implications of his ideas are deep, going well beyond the scope of HR. One blog entry can’t do his presentation justice, and this blog entry doesn’t try to do so. But one thing Don covered is Generation Y’s sharp departure from older generations’ approach to working. That’s highly relevant to HR.

How Millennials Are Transforming Careers and the Workplace

How Millennials Are Transforming Careers and the Workplace | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A Millennial Branding study reported that 45% of Millennials will choose workplace flexibility over pay; 72% want to have a job where they can have an impact; and due to the impact of the recent recession and current high unemployment rate for young people, need economic security (according to a recent AP analysis, more than 53 percent of recent college grads are unemployed or underemployed).
