A Post-Consumer, Post-Capitalist Society: Saral Sarkar’s Eco-Socialism or Eco-Capitalism? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This is a review of Saral Sarkar's Eco-socialism or Eco-capitalism couched as a response to the exaggerated promises of the eco-capitalists.  Sarkar has taken on the exaggerated promises of all who would suggest that the world can be turned into a Disneyland of consumer fun, and proposed instead a Spartan world economy where basic needs are met while ecological realities are taken seriously.

The Dumbing Down of America – By Design - Center for Research on Globalization

The Dumbing Down of America – By Design - Center for Research on Globalization | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The totality of destructive damage that transnational corporations have perpetrated against all forms of planetary life has destroyed the eco-systems of thousands upon thousands of animal and plant species. Of the five times that life on earth has become massively extinct in the past, we humans are rapidly causing the sixth great cycle of mass extinction and the first and fastest due to manmade effects in the form of rising global air and water temperatures and over-polluted water, air and soil. The dead zones across the planet are spreading faster rates of extinction amongst plant and animal life than at any prior time in the earth’s known history. Destruction of our living habitat and eco-system carries perhaps the most damning, ultimate dumbing down effect that the oligarchs have caused. But then they no doubt have laid out their own contingency plan utilizing a hidden technology that can save them when the lights go out on mother earth for the rest of us lowly expendables.

Wild Law - P2P Foundation

Integrating ecology and economy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“One of the hardest things in politics,” U.S. President Barack Obama said in a recent interview, “is getting a democracy to deal with something now where the pay-off is long term or the price of inaction is decades away.” Obama’s words are pertinent not only to the U.S.; they are also relevant to the other great democracy and its spanking new government on the other side of the planet: India.

“Open-Source Reasoning and Open Mindedness as a Strategy for Responding to the Fukushima Crisis” (White Paper) June 2014 | The Asia Institute | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This paper is an expansion of some of the central ideas that were articulated by Emanuel Pastreich and Layne Hartsell in an article published in Foreign Policy in Focus in September, 2013 concerning the response to the meltdown of three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The article, titled “The Century-Long Challenge to Respond to Fukushima,” called for an international collaborative response to the ecological, social and economic crisis left to the world after the disaster of March, 2011.

Community Supported Everything · Portland, Oregon | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

What would happen if communities took higher education into their own hands? What if education meant pursuing our passions and growing at our edges, immersed in a culture of creativity, accountability, integrity and action? What if instead of using degrees to measure our success, we were credited by the direct impact our work has on the world? We could transform our communities and build resilient new systems that will carry us through the next century.

Exclusive: Asia's new super-eco-city - GQ.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Gordon and Adrian were putting the finishing touches on the plan for a new Asian high-tech "city beside a city", detailed images of which are published here for the first time. They are building the site of EXPO 2017, the World Fair, in Astana, Kazakhstan, and rather than create a series of temporary pavilions that turn into white elephants after the event (which has happened with some previous EXPOs), the plan is to create a model sustainable eco-city that is intended to go on to be an enterprise zone for the region and a model for the world.

10 Best Business Books on Environmental Sustainability - Inc.com

10 Best Business Books on Environmental Sustainability - Inc.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In 1970, when Earth Day began, business was the enemy. The previous year, a blowout in a Union Oil platform had dumped more than 80,000 barrels of black stuff into the Santa Barbara Channel. Students and activists loudly protested pollution from factories and power plants. Today, business often is still the enemy. But it is sometimes a force for good--or at least a mouthpiece for good, as evidenced by the nearly 2,000 titles in Amazon's "Green Business" category. The best of these books combine concrete practices and provocative proposals with personal vision and a sense of urgency. Most argue that it makes good business sense to be a responsible citizen of our blue marble.
