The Techno-Leviathan as the Technocratic Politics of the Bitcoin Ledger | P2P Foundation

The Techno-Leviathan as the Technocratic Politics of the Bitcoin Ledger | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
You do not escape the world of big corporates and big government by wishing for a trustless set of technologies that collectively resemble a technocratic crypto-sovereign. Rather, you use technology as a tool within ongoing political battles, and you maintain an ongoing critical outlook towards it. The concept of the decentralised blockchain is powerful. The cold, distrustful edge of cypherpunk, though, is only empowering when it is firmly in the service of creative warm-blooded human communities situated in the physical world of dirt and grime. Perhaps this means de-emphasising the focus on how blockchains can be used to store digital assets or property, and focusing rather on those without assets.

Ukraine Opens To Monsanto And Large-Scale Land-Grabs | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Ukraine’s black earth belt may probably have the most fertile soil on our planet. Ukraine has been called the» bread basket of Europe», and international agribusiness is drooling over the chance to get hold of it. The combination of an economic catastrophe and the corrupt regime in Kiev provides a golden opportunity for Monsanto, GMO to carry out large-scale land-grabs.

The Destruction of a High Tech Economy - IPWatchdog.com

The Destruction of a High Tech Economy - IPWatchdog.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

To those who cheer the demise of software patents and think that open source will win the day and the world will be a better place, I can only say WAKE UP!  The reality is that open source software is a cesspool of vulnerability and a nightmare to maintain. As Sun Microsystems proved, the quickest way to turn a $5 billion company into a $600 million company is to go open source. So be careful what you wish for! Open source is no panacea, and after nearly a generation of trying to make it a profitable business model companies struggle mightily because an open source business model is a service model. That means selling your time, but with only so many hours in a day earnings are sharply limited. Hardly a business model that will lift the U.S. economy that largely creates only low paying service jobs already.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Putting the “Sharing” Back into the Sharing Economy

Adam W. Parsons of www.sharing.org, writing for dissidentvoice.org, provides a clear explanation of the encroaching enclosure of the commons and tendency for existing social relationships to become monetized, ironically under the monicker of the ‘sharing economy’, and suggests ways in which true P2P sharing matrices can be strengthened.

The ongoing Snowden revelations about NSA surveillance have all sorts of implications for the rule of law, constitutional democracy, geopolitical alignments, human rights and much else.  The disclosures deserve our closest attention for these reasons alone.  But what do these revelations have to do with the commons?

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Essay of the day: Snowden, the Terminator, and Us | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
“Fortunately, Edward Snowden also showed us a pathway out. Governments can maybe made accountable, and mass surveillance can surely be evaded, and made much more costly. By moving away from technology that controls us, we can use, promote and develop technology that makes us more free. It is a long path, requiring efforts, to break away with the habits and the blind trust we placed in the Machine, and requiring an appropriation of technology by everyone. Through the use of free software, decentralized architectures and end-to-end encryption, we can –probably– take back control of the Machine.

Zero Marginal Thinking: Jeremy Rifkin gets it all wrong

Zero Marginal Thinking: Jeremy Rifkin gets it all wrong | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A note from the publisher says Jeremy Rifkin himself asked them to ship me a copy of his latest book, The Zero Marginal Cost Society. It’s obvious why: in writing about the economics of open-source software, he thinks I provided one of the paradigmatic cases of what he wants to write about – the displacement of markets in scarce goods by zero-marginal-cost production. Rifkin’s book is an extended argument that this is is a rising trend which will soon obsolesce not just capitalism as we have known it, but many forms of private property as well.

Edward Snowden's testimony to the European Parliament Inquiry Into Mass Surveillance

Edward Snowden's testimony to the European Parliament Inquiry Into Mass Surveillance | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A few weeks back, we reported that the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) committee planned to send some questions to Edward Snowden as part of its inquiry on electronic mass surveillance of EU citizens. He’s now replied to these, prefacing them with a short statement (pdf — embedded below.) Although there are no major revelations — he specifically states that he will not be disclosing anything not already published — it does contain many important clarifications and interesting comments. For example, he confirms that:

John Michael Greer on intermediation and the end of the market economy | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
One of the factors that makes it difficult to think through the economic consequences of the end of the industrial age is that we’ve all grown up in a world where every form of economic activity has been channeled through certain familiar forms for so long that very few people remember that things could be any other way. Another of the factors that make the same effort of thinking difficult is that the conventional economic thought of our time has invested immense effort and oceans of verbiage into obscuring the fact that things could be any other way.

Over the weekend we heard the news that Sony Pictures has been hacked by a group known as “GOP” (who aren’t the same people as the US Republican “Grand Old Party”, presumably). GOP claims to have stolen many of Sony’s “secrets”, including copies of films that haven’t been released, or at least released outside of cinemas yet.

Spanish lawmakers to kill CC licensing | P2P Foundation

Spanish lawmakers to kill CC licensing | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
As usual, Spanish politicians react with fear and repression when confronted with the effects of new ways of sharing information: they are preparing a new law (to go with the ones restricting crowdfunding and services like AirBnB and Uber) to tax those who wish to share information freely. The pattern appears to be: existing industry feels threatened, lobbies government, government passes legislation to hamper innovations. The individual merits of each new service can be argued but anyone who knows the way the conservative government in Madrid generally thinks and reacts, we can be pretty sure they do not understand the milieu in which they are attempting to act.

The three-year occupation of Teatro Valle in Rome is now legendary:  a spontaneous response to the failures of conventional government in supporting a venerated public theater, and the conversion of the theater into a commons by countless ordinary citizens.  Now the mayor of Rome is threatening to end the occupation, evict the commoners and privatize the management of the facility.

Every day we read nonsense and bullshit on Grillo by people who completely ignore the reactionary, authoritarian nature of his movement. Douglas Rushkoff on Corporations, Money and the Middle Ages

Douglas Rushkoff on Corporations, Money and the Middle Ages | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

How did we get to where we are now, with Wall Street occupied by a mini-tent city while financial instruments increasingly funnel funds towards the already-wealthy? How did we get to a state where corporations seem to have more legal (and financial) access to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness than the average citizen? How did we get to a point where money is invisible and computerized, yet distributed ever more unevenly?

There is a standing presumption when one backs a Kickstarter project: you may lose your money. But there's a new—or at least now proven—angle to consider, in light of Facebook's acquisition of the virtual reality company Oculus: people may use your money to make a lot more money without ever properly starting a successful company in the first place.
