Peer-to-peer revolution — Challenging traditional capitalist business models | The Socialist Network

Peer-to-peer revolution — Challenging traditional capitalist business models | The Socialist Network | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

One could have long arguments over the exact definition of socialism if it’s posed as an abstract future-construction. However such a discussion will acquire different quality if we are to base it upon real processes which we can observe in the present reality which are already undermining and (or even outplacing in certain conditions) the established models.

jean lievens's insight:

Here's a short article I wrote back in february last year. forgot all about it + never scooped it. I also forgot to reply to the reply. But I take it back up soon…

Justin Miller on how Mapbox runs like an open source project - opensource.com

Justin Miller on how Mapbox runs like an open source project - opensource.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This is the meat of my talk, but basically, the organization is flat and open. People join in on projects based on interest and available time, or start their own projects based on an idea and the ability to convince a couple coworkers that it's a worthwhile effort. If you have an idea for improvement, talk is cheap and putting in the code to demonstrate its potential is preferred. It's a very exciting way to choose direction and participation and lets everyone engage based on their interests and skill set. And nearly everything we write, anything that's easily reusable by someone else, is completely open source.

Linux for Lettuce | VQR Online

Linux for Lettuce | VQR Online | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

From a distance, Jim Myers looks like an ordinary farmer. Most autumn mornings, he stands thigh-deep in a field of wet broccoli, beheading each plant with a single, sure swipe of his harvest knife. But under his waders are office clothes, and on his wrist is an oversized digital watch with a push-button calculator on its face. As his hand cuts, his eyes record data: stalk length and floret shape, the purple hue of perfect heads and the silver specks that foretell rot. At day’s end his broccoli goes to the food bank or the compost bin—it doesn’t really matter. He’s there to harvest information.

Peer governance and Wikipedia: Identifying and understanding the problems of Wikipedia’s governance | Kostakis | First Monday

Peer governance and Wikipedia: Identifying and understanding the problems of Wikipedia’s governance | Kostakis | First Monday | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The open source software Linux and the popular free online encyclopedia Wikipedia are considered as prominent peer production projects, where individuals voluntarily participate and, using mechanisms of self–governance, produce digital commons. Peer production, a term coined by Benkler (2006), is a third open mode of production that has become typical of the Internet recently, where decisions arise from the free engagement and cooperation of producers. Peer governance is a new mode of governance and bottom–up mode of participative decision–making (Bauwens, 2005a; 2005b). It is the way that peer production, the process by which common value is produced, is managed.
