The Socialist Origins of Big Data

The Socialist Origins of Big Data | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
In June, 1972, Ángel Parra, Chile’s leading folksinger, wrote a song titled “Litany for a Computer and a Baby About to Be Born.” Computers are like children, he sang, and Chilean bureaucrats must not abandon them. The song was prompted by a visit to Santiago from a British consultant who, with his ample beard and burly physique, reminded Parra of Santa Claus—a Santa bearing a “hidden gift, cybernetics.”

Chinese Search Giant Baidu Gets Ready to Battle Google - MIT Technology Review | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Punk bands from Blondie to the Ramones once played in Broadway Studios, an age-worn 95-year-old neoclassical building surrounded by strip clubs in San Francisco’s North Beach. But early on this bright June morning, a different sort of rock star arrives. A small crowd attending a tech startup conference swarms around a tall, soft-spoken man in a blue dress shirt and navy suit who politely poses for photos. Andrew Ng, newly appointed chief scientist at Baidu, China’s dominant search company, is here to talk about his plans to advance deep learning, a powerful new approach to artificial intelligence loosely modeled on the way the brain works. It has already made computers vastly better at recognizing speech, translating languages, and identifying images—and Ng’s work at Google and Stanford University, where he was a professor of computer science, is behind some of the biggest breakthroughs. After his talk, the audience of about 200 entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and tech workers sends him off with two rounds of applause.

“Xinchejian, founded in 2010, means “new workshop.” It occupies a rented room in a Shanghai warehouse. Members pay around $16 a month to use the space and tools, and on Wednesday nights it is open to the public. The Taiwan-born David Li, a 40-year-old programmer and a co-founder of Xinchejian, wants to lower the barriers for experimentation and play. “It’s not about getting together a group of geeks doing something. It’s a conduit for people to say, ‘This interactive stuff is not that scary, not that difficult.’”

Can China kickstart its circular economy and kick its smog?

Can China kickstart its circular economy and kick its smog? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As of January, air pollution in Beijing had soared to 40 times the level recommended by the World Health Organization, according to The Economist, and the country is expected to produce twice as many carbon emissions as the US by 2015. Some 40% of China's mammals are classified as threatened species. The country is also under severe water stress. At the same time, China's growing economy is ravenously hungry for resources, consuming between 40% and 50% of the world's coal, copper, steel, nickel, aluminium and zinc.

Matthew Carrigg's curator insight, October 14, 1:06 PM

The article shows what has happened to China's geography by explaining how much chinas polluting has changed the environment.  China will eventually  consume all the resources we need to survive and they need to create  and use cleaner environment friendly ways of getting energy. If they do not it will only be a matter of time until they consumes all our natural resources and air pollution takes them over and it won't be safe to live there.
