Make It So: Open Source, Arduino-Based Tricorder Nears Completion - IEEE Spectrum

Make It So: Open Source, Arduino-Based Tricorder Nears Completion - IEEE Spectrum | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A tricorder is a piece of fictional equipment* in Star Trek that’s only slightly less realistic than Doctor Who’s sonic screwdriver. A handheld device with a screen, lots of blinking LEDs, and some unspecified set of sensors, a tricorder allows you and your away team to detect alien lifesigns and subspace anomalies and whatever else is necessary to move the plot forward.

Hacking the environment: bringing biodiversity hardware into the open | Science Codex

Hacking the environment: bringing biodiversity hardware into the open | Science Codex | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

New technologies are changing the way we collect biodiversity data. Data that once required taking expensive, bulky and fragile equipment on field trips can now be collected on cheap, compact and robust devices. In a recent paper in the Biodiversity Data Journal the construction of an environmental data-logger using the Arduino platform is described. It is hoped that this work will encourage the adoption of new data collection technologies by biodiversity scientists and foster new collaborations with both electronics hobbyists and electronics engineers who have an interest in biodiversity.

Ride, Captain, Ride Aboard Your Arduino-Controlled Autopiloted Sailboat

Ride, Captain, Ride Aboard Your Arduino-Controlled Autopiloted Sailboat | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

[Jack], a mechanical engineer, loom builder, and avid sailor wanted an autopilot system for his 1983 Robert Perry Nordic 40 sailboat with more modern capabilities than the one it came with. He knew a PC-based solution would work, but it was a bit out of reach. Once his son showed him an Arduino, though, he was on his way. He sallied forth and built this Arduino-based autopilot system for his sloop, the Wile E. Coyote.

Paperduino 2.0 with Circuit Scribe - Paper Arduino | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

What if making an Arduino, or wiring up an Arduino was as easy as printing one out? In this tutorial we printed our own Arduino Pro Mini board using a pen plotter and the Electroninks Circuit Scribe (a rollerball pen with highly conductive ink). Within 15 minutes we printed the board, placed components down with glue or tape, and uploaded a sketch.

4 Advantages of Open-Source Hardware for a Consulting Business

4 Advantages of Open-Source Hardware for a Consulting Business | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In a previous post about how to make money using open-source hardware, I mentioned that one way to generate income was to do consulting projects using commonly used platforms like Arduino. Open-source hardware products like Arduino can be seen as “not professional” or “for hobbyists projects only”, but it is more and more used in many professional projects, as the huge number of Kickstarter projects around open-source ideas can attest. In this article, you will learn why it is actually beneficial for a consulting business to use open-source hardware.

Arduino: Open Hardware at 10 - ComputerworldUK (blog)

Arduino: Open Hardware at 10 - ComputerworldUK (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Something strange is happening in the world of openness: projects are celebrating anniversaries. And not just any anniversary, but ones that remind us that free software and associated open projects have been around for decades now - more than three decades in the case of GNU, and over two decades for Linux. Open hardware is a more recent endeavour, but even that is starting to become venerable. Last Saturday marked thetenth anniversary of perhaps the most important open hardware project of all: Arduino. Here are the basic facts:

Arduino-Based Bathroom Occupancy Detector

Arduino-Based Bathroom Occupancy Detector | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

At the thoughtbot Boston office, when nature calls, there is an arduous, uphill both ways and often snow covered trek to the bathroom area. The bathrooms are also out of sight from anywhere in the office. Many times someone will turn the corner to the bathrooms and see that they are all occupied. That person now must either wait around until a bathroom opens up or go back to their desk and try again later. We wanted an indicator, visible throughout our Boston office, that informs whether a bathroom is available. We used the power of hardware to hack together a solution.
