Children and Computers in Paraguay: Studying What Works and What Doesn't

Children and Computers in Paraguay: Studying What Works and What Doesn't | Peer Instruction and other teaching ideas | Scoop.it

In Paraguay, One Laptop Per Child has definitely been an incremental improvement, but it is incremental. If social change were easy, we’d see it happening all over the place all of the time. It’s difficult to change these institutions.

What is Education 3.0

What is Education 3.0 | Peer Instruction and other teaching ideas | Scoop.it

Education 3.0 is a term that has been used to describe a level of transformative capabilities and practices for education in the 21st century.

Professor Derek Keats, of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa,[1] and his co-author Jan Philipp Schmidt, FreeCourseWare Manager at University of the Western Cape, South Africa, used the term in 2007 to apply to the use and impact on education of collaborative and personalized learning, reusable learning content, and recognition of prior learning (RPL) whether by formal or informal means.

Keats' explorations were focused on higher education.[2] Dr. John Moravec at the University of Minnesota broadens this view, and describes Education 3.0 as a product necessary to support what he labels "Society 3.0" - a near future paradigm of social co-constructivism, ambient technology, and propelled by continuous innovation at all levels of society.[3]

Eric Mazur - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eric Mazur (b. November 14, 1954) is a prominent physicist and educator at Harvard University. Mazur is known for his work in experimental ultrafast optics and condensed matter physics and a national leader in science education. Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Mazur studied physics and astronomy at Leiden University. He passed his "doctoraal examen" (equivalent to a master's degree) in 1977 and continued his graduate studies at the same institution. In 1981 he obtained his Ph.D on a thesis entitled "The structure of non-equilibrium angular momentum polarizations in polyatomic gases". Although he intended to go on to a career in industry with Philips N.V. in Eindhoven, he left Europe at the urging of his father, Peter Mazur, to pursue a postdoctoral study with recent Nobel laureate Nicolaas Bloembergen at Harvard University.

After two years as a postdoc, Mazur was offered a position of assistant professor at Harvard University. In 1987 he was promoted to associate professor and obtained tenure three years later in 1990. Mazur currently holds a chair as Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics jointly in the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and in the Physics Department. He is also the Dean of Applied Physics.

Marion Birch (The University of Manchester)

Marion uses Peer Instruction, developed by Eric Mazur at Harvard, in conjunction with interactive voting systems to encourage students to actively engage with learning in large lecture theatres. Students have the opportunity to individually answer questions by voting, then discuss their answers with their peers before voting again. The results are shown immediately after each instance of the voting. Research has shown that better conceptual understanding is achieved using this approach.

Just in Time Teaching ( JiTT ) .

(Catherine H. Crouch e Eric Mazura)
