We are a global, connected, and digitial world and youth say they want to learn about the world and be better global citizens. Just connecting is not enough. We need a substantially different way of helping children succeed in our schools than we currently have.

Audrey's curator insight, February 5, 7:01 PM

All of these facts make sense.in the 21st Century.  It is necessary to learn about other cultures as youngsters of today will be working alongside people from all over the world.  Learning at least one other language will be essential.  We should be educating children to fit into a world culture, which is being made possible through the "cloud".

50 Reasons It's Time For Smartphones In Every Classroom - TeachThought

50 Reasons It's Time For Smartphones In Every Classroom - TeachThought | Pedagogy | Scoop.it

"To be clear–learning can happen in the absence of technology. Integrated poorly, technology can subdue, distract, stifle, and obscure the kind of personal interactions between learner, content, peer, and performance that lead to learning results.

But increasingly we live in a world where technology is deeply embedded into everything we do. Thinking about it simply in terms of “digital literacy” puts you about 5 years behind the curve. It’s really much more than that–less about being connected, and more about being mobile.

There will be growing pains, and I’m sure educators that have brought in BYOD programs into their school can come up with 50 reasons it won’t work. But most of those 50 are a product of the continued poor fit that exists between schools and communities–the system and the humans it serves."

Completion Rates Aren’t the Best Way to Judge MOOCs, Researchers Say | Pedagogy | Scoop.it

"When it comes to measuring the success of an education program, the bottom line is often the completion rate. How many students are finishing their studies and walking away with a credential?

But that is not the right way to judge massive open online courses, according to researchers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology."

Engagement: A Critical Element in Learning and Gamification « Karl Kapp

Engagement: A Critical Element in Learning and Gamification « Karl Kapp | Pedagogy | Scoop.it

"If you want to have effective learning engagement, in gamification or any type of learning, you need to consider carefully how to grab and hold the learner’s attention.

You need to develop approaches to engage the student..."

Mikko Hakala's insight:

The writer outlines four levels of engagement, or modes of interactivity. In terms of participativity the levels are:

1. Interpretative (gamer vs. system, what are the rules, how to get points)

2. Utilitarian (material component, interface)

3. Explicit (what happens during the game, clicking, selecting etc.)

4. Preparatory (interaction outside the gamification system, preparing for the game)

This is something to keep in mind when designing (educational) games.

Images speak louder than words. We all have recourse to images as visual aids in our teaching but the search for such images is not always an easy one. Most often, you spend a decent amount of time looking for pictures only to be disappointed that they are copyrighted .
