Paper: Review of pedagogical models and frameworks - Cloudworks

diane gusa's insight:

This describes twenty models and frameworks. Thirteen of these are categorised according to whether they principally support associative, cognitive or situative learning perspectives, five are categorised as generic in nature and two are primarily about assessment practice. The final section considers the benefits of articulating pedagogical models and frameworks, but also some of their limitations. The table below summarises the frameworks and models discussed.

diane gusa's insight:

The associative perspective emphasises learning which happens when the learner makes new associations and receives feedback to reinforce these associations.

The cognitiveperspective sees learners processing knowledge declared to them until it is in a compiled form

The situative perspective sees learning as happening within authentic social environments. Wenger’s notion of the community of practice in which learners develop patterns of successful practice is a situative perspective (Wenger, 1998)

Each quadrant (see diagram) contains an app or a learning event which is done using mobile devices and which pertains to that quadrant.

I appreciate the reScoop, Jon. This article has legs to anyone who listens to good EdTech broadcasts. While our show, EdTech Minute, may be the fastest growing program on BAM Radio Network, we only launched in October so our downloads are only now breaking 1,000/month. We will get there, too. Again, thank yo for sharing!

diane gusa's insight:

I too thought that online learning was inferior to the face-2-face model. However, I have found the opposite to be true. If the purpose of education is not just to teach content, but prepare students to be life-time learners in the 21st century, then online courses are a necessary. Unfortunately, higher education has always sacrificed pedagogy for content. If an instructor was knowledgeably in the content area, then he or she was capable of teaching the content. Not true! Teaching is not a process of “banking” in which the instructor deposits information into the students’ heads. Teaching is helping a student to build their own thinking and understandings.

How to Humanize Your Online Class - 2 | Piktochart Infographic Editor
diane gusa's insight:

What is humanizing?

Humanized learning increases the relevance of content and improves students' motivation to log-in week-after-week. When students relate to an online instructor as something more than a subject matter expert and begin to conceive of themselves as part of a larger community, they are more likely to be motivated, be satisfied with their learning, and succeed in achieving the course objectives (Picciano, 2002; Rovai & Barnum, 2003;  Richardson & Swan, 2003)
