The Eight Principles of Connectivism (Visual)

Beth Dichter's curator insight, November 16, 7:39 PM

Have you wondered what connectivism is? This infographic, using information from Stephen Downes and George Siemens provides this definition for connectivism:

"...the thesis that knowledge is distributed across a network of connections, and therefore that learning consists of the ability to connect and traverse those networks."

What are the 8 principles? They are listed below but you will find much more information in the infographic.

1. Learning and knowledge rest in a diversity of opinions

2. Learning is the process of connecting specialized nodes

3. Learning may reside in non-human appliances

4. Capacity to know is more important than what is currently known

5. Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate continual learning

6. The ability to define connections between concepts is important

7. Currency (accurate, up-to-date knowledge) is the intent of all connectivist learning activities

8. Decision-making is a learning process as information can change and what is viewed as correct one day may be incorrect the next

The second part of this infographic focuses on What Does an Online Connectist Course Look Like?

There is much information to be found in this lengthy infographic. It also includes a list of works consulted.

10 years of social media by the numbers

10 years of social media by the numbers | Pedagogy and technology of online learning | Scoop.it

Facebook launched ten years ago in February 2004. Social media hasn't, doesn't and won't stay still. As Myspace rises, Friendster declines. The pattern's repeated itself a few times already, and even Google hasn't quite cracked the magic social network formula, at least not yet. The crown currently belongs to Facebook, a company that's made some big, big startup purchases on the way, although Twitter continues to pack (arguably) more influence. A whole lot has happened in the last decade, but we've tried to squeeze the more interesting parts into something a little more visual.

This infographic provides four key points about e-learning. When you click through to the post you will find detailed descriptions for each of the four ways technology is changing how people learn.

* What does it mean to move from individual to collaborative learning?

* What is this shift from passive to active or brain based learning?
* Technology and differentiated instruction - how does technology assist with this?  (Please note one paragraph is duplicated in this section.)

* Multitasking - Does it work?

The infographic is very simple and it worth reading the text (which is above the inforgraphic when you click through).

Why we need more visual texts in our teaching and learning | Pedagogy and technology of online learning | Scoop.it

"Found this fantastic infographic touting the success of infographics. Reading it (or more correctly, viewing it) immediately focused my thoughts on the use of visual texts in classrooms today...Unlike other infographics I link to on Mr G Online, I’m not going to discuss the specific points presented – that would be contradictory to the message of the infographic. I’ll let you get your own meaning from it. However, I am going to reflect on how it made me consider the use of visual texts in education."

You can absorb the visual faster and make sense of it in a holistic way; particularly if you spend time engaging with the information from different physical points of view. The information is embedded in the memory because the individual is encouraged to project their own meaning.  Having been directed to view educational materials, the learner can them be asked questions to test their understanding.

Visual learning is necessary from a young age and is what home school sources learning is all about.
