The age of curation: From abundance to discovery

Excellent piece filled with stats and studies illustrating how content creation, distribution and curation are shifting...more consumer driven, from multiple platforms and players, and more automation. Companies will be challenged to stay on top of these trends, and continue creating high quality, consumer focused content that "surprises" its readers (vs churning out predictable content). Creativity and innovation will be even more critical as we move ahead...

Using Content Curation Tools to Engage Students

Using Content Curation Tools to Engage Students | Pedagogy and technology of online learning | Scoop.it
When I was in college (for 12 years I might add) there were really only three sources of information available to students: 1) Instructor 2) Textbook 3) Library. This was not such a distant past. A mere two decades ago I finished my undergrad, and I graduated with my PhD in 2001. I don’t think learning, or even how we learn, has changed all that much since then. But what has changed is access to information and how that access might actually distract from learning.

Robin Good's insight:

Here's a valuable resource on content curation, "distilled" by the students of the DCurate MOOC lead Martin Couzins and Sam Burrough which organizes over 60 different articles, guides and tools on the topic.

This resources collection is presented in the form of a Pearltrees interactive map, organized into eight sections:

1. Why Do We Need Curators

2. What Is Digital Curation

3. Aggregation vs. Curation

4. It's All About Audience

5. How Do We Find Valuable Content

6. How Do You Decide What To Curate

7. Curation Tools

8. Contributions from participants

If you are new to content curation this is a good resource to bookmark and keep as a reference.

Scoop. It for SEO – A New World of Curation [Infographic] | Pedagogy and technology of online learning | Scoop.it

For almost everyone who is a part of the online world coming up with fresh content consistently is a big challenge. Practically every guideline advises that content should be engaging, informative and relevant every single time. Consequently, content curation has taken off in a big way.

Simply put, content curation is the process of curating relevant and interesting content from various sources on the web and putting them together and publishing them on a personal site or blog. As a result of the popularity of the content curation process, a number of content marketing tools have been introduced. These tools are meant to help in the process of content marketing and SEO and facilitate the process of curation...

Why content curation is a new form of communication

These are the slides of a talk Guillaume Decugis (Scoop.it) gave at the University of San Francisco on Sept. 17, 2013.

In a post Web 2.0 world, communication has to be re-invented which brings a huge opportunity to individuals, organizations or brands: content curation. While the history of communication until the end of the previous century has only been focusing on enlarging the distribution to a few published or broadcasted content creators, we now live in information overload where content curators can be the new super heroes.

This is a great article that demonstrates the value of curation in education (especially using the platform scoop.it).  Students today must sort through an array of online sources today.  As a professor/curator, I see part of my role being to present students with vetted, quality online information.  I demonstrate this in part ot provide materials for my students, but even more so to teach my students how to assess materials for themselves as they become the curators of information in their own right.

Additionally, using Scoop.it will meet multiple standards (Common Core and NETS-S) across the curriculum. Students use critical thinking skills to collect, evaluate and analyze content; they may identify trends from discourse; they develop writing skills in original expression; and they interact, communicate and publish to a global audience. But perhaps more importantly, students practice digital citizenship and personal responsibility to lifelong learning.
