20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age | Pedagogy and technology of online learning | Scoop.it
What is professional development?  It is pretty much anything that helps one develop professionally. At the heart, professional development is about growth and learning.  In the field of education, it seems like many quickly think of educational opportunities that mimic what they see in their schools. As a result, they turn professional learning and education into schooling.  The problem with that is that schooling is too limiting.  In this age, there are many other exciting and high-impact learning opportunities for teachers that extend beyond traditional notions of schooling.  When we hear the phrase “professional development,” certain practices likely come to mind, things like in-services and conferences. In the digital age, there are countless other opportunities for professional development and restricting one’s thoughts to just a few options limits our insight into what is possible for our students.  With that in mind, here is a brainstorm of 20 options available to educators today. This is far from an exhaustive list, but it is enough to start exploring the possibilities.  Feel free to suggest others in a comment to this post.

We can found in this article 20 different ideas in order to go beyond traditional practices since we are in a digital area with new desires and expectations from students about their learning process and for that we need to grow professionally as teachers. We can highlight some of the most relvevan ones such as "The Webinar with live sessions, Video Tutorials even when is one of the most common strategies,  is really helpful to our professional development, Graduate Courses and Programs online as well to get more knowledge about topics of interest, and other such as Accountability Partners, Training Programs and so on. We need to keep in mind that teachers can't never stop learning.

Professional development for teachers themselves, as personalities, adult people, universally, independently from schooling is very interesting idea, humanistic , and useful for school eventually

Unexpected Tools That are Influencing the Future of Education | Empathy | Social | eSkills | Pedagogy and technology of online learning | Scoop.it
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Much of the disaffection with the school system stems from a pervasive feeling that the intense focus on formal academics has inadvertently neglected the rest of a child’s personality and humanity. While employers, psychologists and other researchers have repeatedly noted that social and emotional skills like empathy are some of the most important ones for success, many schools still lag in developing effective programs to nurture those soft skills.

Societal norms posit girls as being more emotionally intelligent than boys, but the subtle ways that teachers and parents reinforce that gender stereotype can harm boys, who need to learn empathy as an important life skill for connecting with others, problem-solving and developing moral courage.

Many of these interpersonal skills develop naturally when children have the opportunity to play together in unstructured environments, but free play is on the decline both in schools and at home. Researchers are now even questioning if lack of free play in students’ lives could be partly responsible for rising rates of depression among youth.

WISE: We continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice | Pedagogy and technology of online learning | Scoop.it

The new WISE Publication, to be released in 2014, will focus on the link between new technologies and learning. Graham Brown-Martin, Founder of Learning Without Frontiers and Founder of Education Design Labs, will write the third WISE Book, which will be illustrated by the creative photography of award-winning photographer Newsha Tavakolian.

why [has] technology, to date, had very little impact on improved learning outcomes? This could be because we continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice to meet out-dated assessment models.

Most of the world’s curriculum and assessment systems are based around fact recall rather than actually demonstrating that you have learned something and can deploy it within a problem-solving situation.

"Another Brick In The Wall" - Pink Flloyd

The Planetary Archives / San Francisco, California's curator insight, November 17, 2013 3:12 PM

Our  education system is nothing more than child-care with some

indoctrination thown in.

See/hear "The Wall" by Pink Floyd  (40+ years ago.)

Let the children play until they are old enough to decide what they are interested in learning. That's completely different than training them from Day 1 to "sit still, be quiet, and obey authority." Training a 5-year old to become a "worker" or 'Businessman"  is not education, but it may be child abuse.

===> Good content curation doesn't consist of simply regurgitating content that others have published. Your brand story-telling must include a human element in the form of personalizing the information and making it compelling to your social media followers. <===

Successful programs provide context and communicate it in a transparent fashion, enabling you to amplify your brand message and create passionate subscribers.
