Teaching, Learning and Making in Design Education

Teaching, Learning and Making in Design Education | pedagogy | Scoop.it

pedagogy is that students have to “make” or “produce” objects, from for
example, web pages to bicycles to books in order to prove that they have
learned to become designers.
Noeline Wright's insight:

A provocative post, in which the author takes to task the 'doing' focus at the expense of real thought, or, as he puts it, 'rampant anti-intellectualism". And there is rampant anti-intellectualism in some places - it's a position that seems to suggest that thinking for a living and for life is a bad thing. And yet, being an independent thinker (in other words someone who knows how to find out things for themselves, weight up pros and cons, and not be led by mob thinking, as well as critique the powers that be) is surely the mark of a well-rounded citizen

Linda Alexander's curator insight, February 17, 2013 8:36 AM

Design education isn't necessarily about making something--an outcome of an object.  Design education also centers on "communication, language and quality of interaction, that is, how to fabricate a relational environment that may or may not have objects as their focus".

pedagogy
Pedagogy is the umbrella term for the teaching-learning continuum, particularly as it relates to schools. My particular interest is the intersection with digital technologies and their potential in New Zealand schools

Study Shows How Classroom Design Affects Student Learning

Noeline Wright's insight:

Given the Christchurch rebuild and reorganisation of schools, this is pertinent. Wouldn't it be great if architects and MOE listened to what teachers needed to optimise learning? Since context is crucial, and each subject has different curriculum requirements, this would be a sensible element
