Juillet 2012 : The field of online education has seen tremendous growth in the recent past. More than 6.1 million students are enrolled in various accredited degree programs offered by 2,500 colleges and universities across the United States. Almost 30 states in the country have full-time, online K-12 schools. Close to 2 million children were enrolled in K-12 distance learning programs. (This list is in no particular order).

Today, if you asked me about my most memorable learning failures, I will tell you I am glad they happened. My errors have made me a better teacher and learner. I can now relate to students who have a difficult time understanding a concept. The failures themselves may not have been my strongest point, but what I learned from them was invaluable. If higher ed is to change then our educational technology leaders must play a central role. This call for change in higher ed begs the question - what sort of change? I'll suggest 3 dimensions that I view as imperative that we address in the next decade.
1. Productivity : By productivity I mean steps that will simultaneously drive down costs while increasing quality 2. Relevance 3. Access: The demand for quality, affordable higher education dramatically outstrips the supply. Many educators are beginning to become aware of the growing teaching method referred to as “Flipping The Classroom”. Simply put… the teacher provides videos for homework, while traditional home work is done in class under teacher supervision. Unfortunately this might be just too simplistic of a definition.
