[PDF] The paradox of classroom technology

[PDF] The paradox of classroom technology | Pedagogia Infomacional | Scoop.it
Learners’ use of digital tools and other technology to support their learning in our K-12 systems continues to be sporadic and often not observed despite the proliferation of use outside of school. Based on an analysis of three years of direct classroom observations in K-12 schools across 39 states and 11 countries, AdvancED found there are still relatively few classrooms in which the use of digital tools and technology is a regular part of a student’s school experience. In more than half (52.7 percent) of classrooms direct observations show no evidence students are using technology to gather, evaluate, or use information for learning; two-thirds of classrooms show no evidence of students using technology to solve problems, conduct research, or to work collaboratively.

Trained and certified observers conduct classroom observations as a part of AdvancED’s continuous improvement process which could include STEM Certification, accreditation, readiness and/or diagnostic review. Each observation lasts a minimum of 20 minutes during which observers use the learner-centric eProve™ Effective Learning Environments Observation Tool® (eleot®) to gather data focused on the activities learners are engaged in, their discussions and interactions, resources they are using for learning, their behaviors and dispositions during the learning process, etc. Observers rate each of the 30 eleot items on a four-point scale where 4 = Very Evident, 3 = Evident, 2 = Somewhat Evident and 1 = Not Observed

Víctor Xepiti Eme's curator insight, August 1, 12:13 AM
We need to ensure that teachers are provided support and training so that they know how to integrate students’ use of technology into their classrooms and create a student-centric learning environment. Until teachers and administrators
are convinced that technology can be a help not a hindrance to learning, the shift will not happen.
The teacher is the key to students successfully using technology as a learning and problem-solving tool. Students thrive when the teacher requires students to use technology not only for researching and writing but also to solve problems, work collaboratively and develop creativity
malek's curator insight, August 4, 9:52 AM

While numerous surveys suggest that the pervasive use of tablets, smartphones, laptops and digital education content in the classroom is expanding and changing the role of teachers, the AdvancED study found little evidence of technology being used by students to strengthen learning in classrooms today.

Newer technologies make animations easier to create at a reasonable cost, making the format a viable choice for instruction. With educational researchers piecing together the data on its effectiveness for learning, a set of design principles based on evidence is emerging. It is important to consider the research before choosing to use the animation format. Then animations will be able to meet their potential for learning.

Connectivism: Emerging perspectives on learning, teaching and technology

Connectivism: Emerging perspectives on learning, teaching and technology | Pedagogia Infomacional | Scoop.it
Just like anything else that involves human experience or interaction, the act of learning does not happen in a vacuum. It is at the intersection of prior knowledge, experience, perception, reality, comprehension, and flexibility that learning occurs. In years past, the traditional learning paradigms of behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism have been the benchmarks against which the learning process has been measured. What happens, though, when you throw into the mix all the technological advancements that have come about over the last 40-50 years? These theories certainly do not become obsolete by any means, but they do need to be used in a very different way to be able to incorporate the attributes of a 21st century learning environment. In today’s technology-rich society, it has become increasingly important to learn how to learn. Vail put it simply by declaring that learning must be a way of being (1996).

The Hidden Curriculum of Work

The Hidden Curriculum of Work | Pedagogia Infomacional | Scoop.it

What do you do for work? Not, what is your job title, or what’s written in your official job description? But what do you actually do?

It’s potentially the most important question you can ask yourself if you care about standing out, staying ahead of the change curve, and continuously elevating your performance to gain access to choice assignments and opportunities to advance.

This is because the value you deliver, the results you produce, and the impact you have on others come more often from the execution of unspoken intangibles that are not reflected in your title, job description, or the daily tasks and activities you’re responsible for. This severe mismatch is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the true demands of work.

The hidden curriculum of work, is about what goes beyond your job profile. When you apply for a perticular post, you are accepting two jobs, one is the what you applied for, and the other is the interpersonal work, the hidden curriulum that goes with the post. The post of teaching includes your knowledge of the subject, pedagogical skills and most immportant of all are your inter-personal skills, your life skills, your attitude towards the learners, approachablility...etc.

Main findings

"The key finding of the study is that a common conceptual approach at European level, capable of supporting the development of digital capacity in educational organisations, is both desirable and attainable.

The DigCompOrg framework has seven key elements and fifteen sub-elements that are common to all education sectors. There is also scope for the addition of sectorspecific elements and sub-elements. For each of the elements and sub-elements of DigCompOrg, a number of descriptors were developed (74 in total). Diagrammatically, the elements, sub-elements and descriptors of DigCompOrg are presented as the sectors of a circle, with an emphasis on their inter-relatedness and inter-dependence."

Pamela D Lloyd's curator insight, August 7, 10:06 PM
Walk into any natural history museum or zoo, and you will notice placards that provide information about the exhibits. These are a form of augmented reality that we take so much for granted that we don't typically distinguish them as anything other than reality. With our new ability to carry information in our pockets, we are suddenly much more aware of that augmentation, making it feel like something new. Certainly, its ubiquity is new, but it draws much from those exhibit notices, and from books and items such as baseball cards. Incorporating fun instant info into the learning process can help energize that process, regardless of whether it's done through new technology or old.
