The Learning Innovation Cycle

Disruption is an interesting topic for the same reason that cowboys, gangsters, and villains are interesting. It’s unpredictable. Problematic. Against the grain.

It’s kind of aging as a buzzword in the “education space,” but it’s other-worldly powerful, and there are few things education needs more. How exactly it produces change is less clear, but I thought I’d create a model to think about. First, a quick preface. The iconic vision of disruptive innovation comes from Clayton Christensen, who uses the term to “describe a process by which a product or service takes root initially in simple applications at the bottom of a market and then relentlessly moves up market, eventually displacing established competitors.”

“Companies pursue these “sustaining innovations” at the higher tiers of their markets because this is what has historically helped them succeed: by charging the highest prices to their most demanding and sophisticated customers at the top of the market, companies will achieve the greatest profitability. However, by doing so, companies unwittingly open the door to “disruptive innovations” at the bottom of the market. An innovation that is disruptive allows a whole new population of consumers at the bottom of a market access to a product or service that was historically only accessible to consumers with a lot of money or a lot of skill.”

I usually think of disruption as any change that forces itself substantially on existing power sets. This force causes transfer–a redistribution of something–market share, money, credibility, knowledge, or something we collectively value. Here, in this literal re-vision (seeing again) and neo-vision (seeing new), is where enduring learning innovation can be born.

I consider really important to take into account technology as part of our teaching methodologies. Nowadays, technology can not be let behind, since it has advanced considerably we can not isolate it from education. As a matter of fact, technology is a powerfull tool that can contribute positively if we plan how to use it correctly in order to benefit our learners.

 

Considerably it has advanced, reason why lots of teachers are afraid to use it.It is sometimes a big responsability and also, it is something that demands training and a lot of practice.However, we have to be conscious of this necessity to implement teaching sessions through technology, in order to guarantee to learners an updated and renewed educational system; besides, it would impact positively in our current  technological society and culture.

No todo es ventajoso en el flipped classroom, pues al ser resignificado por el uso de la tecnología, este puede generar una inequidad entre los estudiantes que tienen o nó acceso a ella. Like teaching (educate and pedagogy are etymologically about leading) leading is about listening first. Sometimes asking questions furthers the conversation and understanding of others. They solve their problems.

What does it mean to listen? Listening points to four levels: what we can see and hear, the emotions and thoughts, the sensations and what's wanting to emerge (or not). How much of our listening is directed to each of these four levels? Do we really listen when we speak? Do we listen inwards, outwards, both, or neither? Listening comes from the feminine side of us, specially deep listening. What is needed for a deeper listening? What is all this noise telling us?

For companies, investing in worker skills makes sense too – it promotes flexibility and creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and an increased sense of agency among staff, making them happier and more productive. These are, of course, exactly the traits needed as companies face of the challenges of the latest industrial revolution.

For governments, supporting learning in later life helps to delay the onset of dependency among rapidly ageing populations; plays an important role in overcoming inequality and exclusion; and supports inter-generational learning, creating more resilient families and communities. More broadly, learning fosters improved well-being.

Jacques Delors, then President of the European Commission, summed this up in 1992 when he argued that lifelong learning was crucial to both economic prosperity and social cohesion.

Education buzzwords have for a long time driven me insane as we spend our lives in schools latching on to phrase after phrase that tries to make us sound more knowledgeable without actually being more knowledgeable. I fear sometimes us “tech geeks” in schools ( definitely me included) are getting caught in the same trap as we move from one innovation to the next just to look more tech savvy than the next guy. This is a long list of edtech trends and pedagogies. It can seem quite daunting to the uninitiated and we can scare them off trying something really useful if keep pushing for more change.

It is almost universally acknowledged that in order to succeed in the 21st century, students must learn much more than the “three Rs” and basic computer competency.

 

The term “21st century skills” is used often in educational circles to refer to a range of abilities and competencies that go beyond what has traditionally been taught in the classroom, including problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation. Others define the term as “information literacy, media literacy, and information, communication and technology literacy.”

 

More importantly, students need these skills because employers across a huge variety of industries increasingly demand them. A recent McKinsey report indicated that close to 40 percent of employers could not find people with the right skills while 60 percent “complain[ed] of a lack of preparation.” Even jobs that were once considered vocational, such as welding, petroleum production, and even factory work, are now high tech, and require specialized knowledge that includes not only a robust science background and familiarity with the computerized machinery that keeps heavy industry humming, but also critical thinking and collaboration skills. In other words, 21st century job growth is outpacing our ability to develop a prepared workforce, making it more critical than ever to teach these skills.

I am convinced now that we cannot "put new wine into old wineskins." We need to fundamentally rethink how we conceptualize "school." Bolting on new parts to the old system runs into the problem of the inertia of the old. There is so much to say here. We came into the 21st Century with a model of education that is, practically speaking, a "production" model where teachers stay in front of students and their productivity is measures by hours in front of students multiplied by number of students. The more hours and the more students, the more productive. My school is willing to explore a new paradigm, one in which teaching is modeling how to learn and guiding students toward a lifetime and lifestyle of learning . Such a mindset naturally leads to relational approaches. It is no so much about the numbers, but about learners seeing teachers as learners and learning "guild" leaders, too.
