The problem of aflatoxin contamination requires multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder actionsnot possible to solve by a single actor or discipline.  The problem  and necessitate focus on the cause.

This article briefly describes measures that can be taken to reduce aflatoxin contamination (technology solutions) and to minimize risk of human or animal exposure in the event that contamination does occur (regulatory solutions).  It also states need for creating a policy and institutional environment so that technology solutions and regulation can be effective in abating the aflatoxin problem.

The MTLs for aflatoxins range from 4 ppb in the European Union, 15 ppb in most countries that have regulations, 20 ppb in the USA, to 30 ppb in India. Harmonization of aflatoxin regulations and risk management approaches could facilitate trade. The maximum limits for aflatoxins in foodstuffs are one of the most commonly established toxin limits worldwide, but only 15 African countries have set limits for alfatoxins.

Countries should make provisions for alternative use practices (channeling aflatoxin contaminated food to less risky uses including, but not limited to, diverting to animal feed and, at higher contamination level, biofuel). Incentives for aflatoxin safe food are crucial as they derive demand for aflatoxin control technologies.

Policy and institutional support could be improved, among others, by incorporating aflatoxin control in broader SPS agenda to which nearly all countries are signatories. Building analytical capacity is important. Training at all levels, from grass root to high level policy makers, is needed although the approaches and timing differ.

The article concludes, the complexity of the aflatoxin problem calls for coordinated efforts and integrated approaches for managing the risk to public health, food security, trade and economic development.

The PACA initiative aims at coordinating aflatoxin control across health, trade and agriculture sectors in Africa is making strides against aflatoxins and could serve as a holistic model for addressing the aflatoxin risk and other complex problems.

Eating Peanuts Daily Results in 20% decrease in risk of Death due to all causes.

Eating Peanuts Daily Results in 20% decrease in risk of Death due to all causes. | Peanuts, bioactive superfood in a shell | Scoop.it
Anna V. A. Resurreccion's insight:

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that eating an ounce of peanuts daily reduced risk of death from all causes by up to 20%.  Results showed that the more frequently peanuts were consumed, the lower the risk of death. Compared to nonnut eaters,Results also showed that peanut eaters were leaner.

The study, “Association of Nut Consumption with Total and Cause-Specific Mortality”, conducted at the Harvard Medical School, is the largest and strongest study to date looking at death from all causes in nut eaters.  Researchers tracked almost 119,000 men and women 30-year period.

Those who consumed the peanuts less than one time a week reduced risk of death by 7%, weekly eaters reduced risk 11%, eating peanuts two to four times a week cut risk by 13%, and eating peanuts seven or more times a week cut risk by about 20%.

"We don't see any difference in the benefits between peanuts and tree nuts", said Dr. Charles Fuchs, who led the Harvard research team.

Previous research from Harvard School of Public Health showed that a 1-ounce serving of peanuts or a half serving (one Tablespoon) of peanut butter five or more times a week, can decrease the risk of diabetes by 27% and 21% respectively. Additional work by Harvard showed that a handful of peanuts eaten five or more times per
week can cut the risk of heart disease in half.

Anna V. A. Resurreccion's curator insight, September 20, 2013 6:00 PM
RSR International Group, LLCAflatoxins are found in corn, rice, coconut, peanuts and other food sources. They cause hepatocellular carcinoma, growth stunting in children and immunosuppression. 4.5 billion people, globally, are at risk of exposure (CDC). Aflatoxins are one of the many Mycotoxins found in food. I and my research team in the Philippines developed the ONLY effective technology to remove aflatoxin from processed peanut products, for small and medium sized companies that cannot afford electronic sorters. We transferred the technology to at least 10 companies in the Philippines. We then scaled up and transferred the technology in Thailand, nation-wide, in Uganda (east Africa), Ghana (west Africa) and now in Southern Africa, beginning with one country and continuing to two others in the region. I am searching for funds to continue to scale up the technology transfer and adoption, in light of serious food insecurity today that affects 1.5 billion people (FAO) and a predicted population of 9 billion in 2030. Pictured here is part of a training program in Africa that I helped to plan, implement and conduct on September 9-11,2013.

The research implies thaht peanuts should be consumed at breakfast or in the late afternoon, to control appetitte and lower blood sugar.
