According to their learned lawyer, Julie Garber, it’s all about loyalty, trust and common sense.   The five top qualities you should look for:

1)   Extremely loyal and fair – loyal and fair to both you and your family.

2)   Extremely trustworthy – handling your valuable financial and personal assets.

3)   Practical – it’s not simple or easy, and unforeseen circumstances are the norm.

4)   Organized – balancing budgets, accounts – and people.

5)   Tough – being thick-skinned to deal with the demands of family and corporate red-tape.

Other Costs of Caregiving

Other Costs of Caregiving | Peace of Mind for Caregivers | Scoop.it

"Caregivers suffer loss of wages, health insurance and other job benefits, retirement saving or investing, and Social Security benefits—losses that hold serious consequences for the "career caregiver." 37% of caregivers report quitting their job or reducing their work hours to care for someone 50+ in 2007.

"Studies suggest that the cost of informal caregiving in terms of lost productivity to U.S. businesses is $17.1 to $33 billion annually. Costs reflect absenteeism ($5.1 billion), shifts from full-time to part-time work ($4.8 billion), replacing employees ($6.6 billion), and workday adjustments ($6.3 billion).

"Long-distance caregivers spend an average of $392/month on travel and out-of-pocket expenses as part of their caregiving duties."

Hiring a geriatric care manager can actually cut down on costs by using their expertise and knowledge to assess your specific situation, implement a cost effective care plan, and reduce the risk for future crises.

Chicago Trustee Collaboratory's curator insight, March 9, 2014 1:41 PM

In this video, members of the Chicago Trustee Collaboratory address a few key issues around the opportunity of using a trust to both educate the next generation and promote their maturity.

This is one of the points raised by Kathy Wiseman in Chapter 2 of "Trustworthy"  - and one of 10 key points the Collaboratory identifies in the book.

The Collaboratory’s insights include:

  • Using this opportunity well is key to helping the family flourish.
  •  The family should be accepted and worked with from wherever they are at.
  • The rule of thumb of 3 parts qualitative to 1 quantitative applies.
  • Work with meaning, context and alignment.
