Teacher vs Student: How Each Actually Uses Social Media

Teacher vs Student: How Each Actually Uses Social Media | PE and 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it

Both teachers and students use it pretty actively, and it can easily be used in the classroom. Do you agree? What do you think is the most ‘all-around’ social media platform for both teachers and students (in and out of class)?

This article is interesting and should be top of mind for any training organisation that wants to employ social media in the delivery of it's training programs.

I have been working with the use of technology in the delivery and management of education and training programs since the late 80's and am constantly amazed by my 7 year old grandson as he goes about do things like logging onto the Leggo website to access a plan so as he can build a new "something" in Leggo etc.

How Digital Writing Is Making Kids Smarter

How Digital Writing Is Making Kids Smarter | PE and 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it

Writing used to be strictly an in-school activity. Now, kids do 40 percent of their writing outside of school. Called “life writing,” young adults’ social writing spans texts, tweets, social media, and blogs -- and all of it’s making kids more literate.

Via Nik Peachey
Tracey Healey's insight:

Good teachers are recognising newer forms of communication young people use and building on these, but it needs to be more widely recognised - particularly at policy/govt. level. I like the term LIFE WRITING - this should be celebrated.

I can't believe kids are doing more than 40% of their writing outside of school. "Life writing" may make grammar teachers cringe, but at least students are engaging with others and sharing ideas in this format.

That's why we need to bring social writing into school.

How Do We Define and Measure “Deeper Learning”?

How Do We Define and Measure “Deeper Learning”? | PE and 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it

What is "deeper learning"? The National Research Council of the National Academies of Science released a report, Transferable Knowledge and Skills Key to Success in Education and Work. This report "calls for efforts to incorporate 'Deeper Learning' into curriculum."

This post explores the three domains of competence that are discussed in the report: cognitive, intrapersonal and interpersonal. Each is defined and the question is raised, can deeper learning be taught? The post provides a great overview and here is the link to the full report:

The Neuroscience At The Heart Of Learning And Leading

The Neuroscience At The Heart Of Learning And Leading | PE and 21st Century Learning | Scoop.it

NexusEQ Conference on the campus of Harvard University

Marco Iacoboni is one of the pioneers in a new area of neuroscience. A few years ago in Parma, Italy, scientists were researching how the brain controls our actions. They accidentally discovered a whole new class of brain cells that seem to be the neural basis of empathy. They called them “mirror neurons” because these cells seemed to map one person’s actions into another’s brain—a kind of imprinting that explains why role models and mentors can be such powerful influences. Since then, Iacoboni and others have found these special neurons in other areas of the brain, and their story has become even more fascinating.
