Smartphone users worldwide will download more than 45 billion apps this year, nearly twice the number of apps that were downloaded in 2011. Apple, Google and Microsoft dominate the global app market, with Apple accounting for the largest portion of app downloads in 2012. Gartner projects that there will be about 21 billion apps downloaded from Apple’s App Store this year, a 74% increase from the previous year. Going forward though, Gartner predicts that these companies will see growing competition in the app market from Facebook and Amazon. “Amazon has appealed to users with its strong brand, global presence and a good selection of high-quality content while Facebook’s recently launched App Center — supporting both mobile devices and desktops — will become a powerful competitor due to its strong brand and leading position in social networking and gaming,” said Sandy Shen, Gartner’s research director. By 2016, Gartner estimates that there will be more than 300 billion apps downloaded annually, or more than 10 times the amount that were downloaded in 2011. While the appetite for apps will continue to increase, the appetite for paid apps will actually decline as a percentage of overall downloads.

Mobile gaming apps have been quietly reinventing mobile advertising and out-monetizing even the large, well-established publishers. Here are a few things the mobile games companies have worked out ...
Apple has been awarded a new patent related to an augmented reality system, making it the latest handset manufacturer to place a bet that the technology will play a key role in next generation mobile experiences.
Google, Nokia and Samsung, as well as marketers, are also supporting augmented reality in order to get ahead of what is expected to be a significant wave in consumer demand for these experiences. While the technology is still in the early stages, the expectation is that it will play a bigger role going forward in how consumers access a variety of types of content.
“As mobile industry transitions from keypad to touch screen as the new interaction mechanism, Augmented Reality based interaction will drive the next wave of growth ,” said Neil Shah, senior analyst for the global wireless practice at Strategy Analytics, Newton, MA. “As a result, companies such as Google, Apple and Samsung are investing in this area.

Combined sales of iOS and Android games were higher than those for Sony and Nintendo's portables in the last three months of 2012, according to a study.
"Playing video games for an extended period of time, or, well playing them at all, will rot your brain. At least, that’s what we’ve been led to believe. Actually, those fighting against gaming see something a lot worse than simple brain rot. To that particular establishment, video games are responsible for just about every social ill you can think of, especially violence." If you are interested in seeing statistics that show that gaming has positive influences check out this infographic.

When it comes to Apple and Android, fans of each will scream at each other that their apps are better, more numerous and generally awesome. Who is right? The general perception is that iOS apps in Apple’s App Store are of better quality than their Android counterparts in Google Play. There has been really no way to quantify that though the history of the mobile app ecosystem. Until today. We can finally say, through quantifiable data, that iOS apps on aggregate are of better quality than Android.
