A Day In The Life Of The Internet – infographic

A Day In The Life Of The Internet – infographic | PBS | Scoop.it

'There are close to two and-a-half billion people online around the world – this number has grown 566 percent since the year 2000 – and 70 percent of them use the internet every day. As you might imagine, with that kind of presence, which amounts to more than a third of the global population, quite a lot happens over the course of each 24 hours.

The Internet never sleeps.  Is it possible to even fathom the idea of any given moment without someone in the world being connected to the Internet for one reason or another?  It wasn’t that long ago that the Internet wasn’t even a thing, but anymore it’s something that we can’t do without.  ztake a look at “A Day in the Life of the Internet”...

The Importance of Social Media For SEO

The Importance of Social Media For SEO | PBS | Scoop.it

"SEO and use of Social Media are essential to success. On their own, they’re only a piece of the puzzle, and only doing one may not produce the results you want".

SEO, or search engine optimization, is a form of marketing through which a company’s website, or piece of content on a website, reaches a higher ranking on search engines to maximize visibility to consumers thereby creating a higher probability of traffic, which can later translate to sales and/or interaction depending on your business goals.

This is accomplished through creation of “do follow” links within a number of different arenas. While there’s more to making a web-based company successful than just good SEO, it is a very important part of getting clicks and page views.

[Infographic] Evolving SEO tactics: longer posts, Google+ and the tilde | PBS | Scoop.it

This is an infographic about current SEO thinking with tips and tools to help sites rank better on search engines.

Most people have a general idea of how to optimize their content for search engines. That search engine algorithms are proprietary and evolving inevitably causes different opinions on SEO. Of course there’s another school of thought that minimal keyword research and a green-light from a SEO plugin are enough to publish a piece.

This infographic challenges writers and some of the preconceived notions about SEO. It has a mixture of tips and tools to help you rank better in search...

Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, May 2, 2013 9:52 AM
Great comment MizWalidah. I wold modify one point. Instead of "continually optimizing your meta keywords and tags" I would find ways to ping in fresh content such as User Generated Content from reviews or comments. Once a website I've SEOed is inside of Google's algorithm changing meta values that matter (mostly the page's title) can HURT SEO. I change titles VERY VERY carefully since the first rule of SEO is DO NO DAMAGE. The QDF (Quality Deserves Freshness) movement post Panda and Penguin LOVES it when a page pings, so I love the 1% of visitors who are willing to comment, review or otherwise contribute User Generated Content.

I DON'T play with meta nearly as much as you imply since to do so can look SPAMMY and cause real harm. The most important idea is creating content other people want to share. This is why I love GAMES and CONTESTS especially for bands. High engagement content such as Contests and Games can help with SEO and they can help create a distinct brand all bands need. Appreciate your enthusiasm, but be careful about meta (especially title) changes. Marty

Good post by Amanda DiSilvestro (via Search Engine Journal) about the pros and cons of using social media as your primary marketing strategy. Her conclusion:

“A primary strategy works well, but it rarely works as your only strategy ... So what about social media marketing being your only strategy? It seems as though it would work in certain instances, but you simply can’t discount the fact that your business is going to change and have more needs as it develops. In other words, social media marketing can definitely be an overall primary strategy for some, but it shouldn’t be the only strategy used to sell your product or service."

It has become clear that social media is turning into quite the process. It’s becoming more and more important, so many different tools and advice columns keep popping up to help businesses and individuals stay organized and successful when it comes to this newer marketing effort. This has caused many companies to create a full-time social media position for experts to help manage the many social accounts, follow analytics, get creative with engagement, etc. It takes a lot of time and effort, but the payoff is only increasing as social involvement increase.

6 case studies & infographics: the optimal time to send emails

6 case studies & infographics: the optimal time to send emails | PBS | Scoop.it

Email has the potential to deliver a strong ROI for marketers, though the precise response rates depend on a number of factors including the subject line, type of offers and the time of day the email is sent.

The best way of accurately finding the optimal time of day to send your emails is to run tests, taking into account fluctuations around pay day and annual events such as Christmas and bank holidays.

According to the Econsultancy/Adestra Email Marketing Industry Census 2013 only half of businesses (49%) are currently testing the time and day of their email messages, so either the other 51% already know the optimum time or they're working off a hunch.

So to give some food for thought on where to start looking and testing, here are six case studies and infographics that look at the best time and day of the week to send emails...

Social media marketing has, over the past few years, gone from something practiced by a few early adopters to a crucial part of most big advertising campaigns. For proof of that, you only have to look at the results of a recent Gartner survey, which showed that most people now see social as being nearly as important as a corporate website and more traditional forms of online advertising.

The awards have just announced the nominees for the 2013 edition. While there is still a strong US presence, emerging market countries such as Brazil, Russia and China are increasingly evident among the nominees.

Among the more interesting campaigns from those nominees is one called “You are Blind” from the Hungry Boys agency in Russia, which aims change the treatment of blind children, by giving people insight into what they go through. The primary way of doing this was with a website that challenged people to navigate a character through a virtual city using only sound.

You see it all the time - business owners working longer and longer hours - chasing business, fire-fighting the day to day needs of running a business. Taking a more strategic view of your business will save you time. The likes of Richard Branson, Deborah Meaden and Alan Sugar, have the same amount of hours in a day as you; and did so whent they started with nothing!

It's a refreshing look to content marketing strategies. I appreciate the analogy of a newspaper cycle and magazine cycle. You're swimming upstream if you're constantly chasing deadlines.

I don't subscribe to a monthly theme, rather I allocate content into content buckets based on a theme and try to allocate enough content to each of those buckets.

Know the difference between posts, pages and custom post types; and

Claim Google authorship for your content

DON’TS:

Let a “everything but the kitchen sink” WordPress theme handle SEO;

Go category and tag crazy;

Ignore the slugs;

Be lazy when adding images to posts;

Autopilot your posts’ meta descriptions; and

Optimizing For Facebook Graph Search: SEO Meets Social

Optimizing For Facebook Graph Search: SEO Meets Social | PBS | Scoop.it

As Facebook Graph Search evolves and marketers begin to come to grips with the opportunities provided from the social graph, it becomes clear that a combination of both search and social media tactics are required if brands aim to improve visibility in the graph search engine results.

Just as on-page optimization is vital to SEO, Facebook page optimization is the first place to start on your Graph Search strategy. Ensure that you have selected the appropriate category, and plan for your basic information (such as the short description and the elements on your About page) to contain descriptive keywords, just like search. Make sure your page is relevant, always up to date, and publicly viewable and sharable.
