A bit of a setback today for mobile payments and specifically iZettle -- the startup modelled as a kind of "European Square" for merchants to take card payments on their phones. The company today had to shut off accepting Visa cards in three of the markets where it has been running pilots — Denmark, Finland and Norway [...]

 

Visa Inc. in the U.S. is an investor in Square, and MasterCard recently became an investor in iZettle, so it is easy to think that this story may be a case of muscle flexing between the two larger companies: perhaps a sign of Square setting the stage for a European launch?

 

De Geer says that’s very unlikely because Visa Europe is an association owned by its members in different markets, while Visa Inc is a publicly-traded U.S. company...

 

Therese's comment: Visa Europe claims that iZettle's authentication process does not meet its requirements; Visa Europe competes with MasterCard Europe just as Visa Inc competes with MasterCard US.

"mPowa's free plug-in reader and app will be available next month, letting users accept credit and debit card payments through their iPhones, iPads, BlackBerrys and Android devices, with mPowa taking 0.25% per transaction."

 

Two questions: 1) Funding: It's unclear where Powa will get the funds to deploy the free readers and create a viable ecosystem. Let's not forget that USstart-up Square has raised $168 million to this day. I know that the US is a bigger market but... 2) A swipe card reader when the UK is shifting to pin cards?
