How Stripe Plans To Make Mobile Pay - an unanswered question | Payments 2.0 | Scoop.it

"Stripe has courted mobile-app developers by  offering a service that makes it easy to take credit-card payments in two ways:  First, by avoiding the need to get approved for a merchant account by a  conventional provider, and second, by simplifying the process of adding payments code to an app."

[...]

Stripe powers apps like Lyft, the  ride-sharing service, and Exec, the on-demand assistant service. Its primary  competitor in the app-payments market is Braintree, which is used by e-commerce  apps like HotelTonight and Fab.

So much for simplicity: Stripe adds optional two-factor authentication

So much for simplicity: Stripe adds optional two-factor authentication | Payments 2.0 | Scoop.it
TWN: Stripe on Thursday announced it has added a new two-step verification setting in an effort to improve the security of its service. To use the new feature, you'll also need to download ...
Therese Torris's insight:

Stripe promoted itself as easy and simple online payments. They must have realized that payments pose quite a few security issues (AHA!). Two-factor authentication is great but it seriously slows down and complexifies the payment process.

PayPal's rival Stripe manages to convince ... TechCrunch

PayPal's rival Stripe manages to convince ... TechCrunch | Payments 2.0 | Scoop.it

TechCrunch: "Stripe, the YC-backed payments startup funded by Sequoia and PayPal's original founders, is launching a new way for marketplaces and collaborative consumption startups to let their users directly accept payments..." "Called Stripe Connect, the product lets users of any partner website directly receive payments. Before, an individual user would have to go through a time-consuming process of applying for a merchant account."...

Therese's comment: Stripe claims to have simplified the user registration, but -as this quite unclear article points out -- Stripe still has to collect bank ID, social security numbers etc. for security reasons. It thus remains unclear how user registration differs from a normally extensive user registration process.

"How Screwed Is PayPal?" Sarah Lacy reports PayPal founders are now backing Stripe

"How Screwed Is PayPal?" Sarah Lacy reports PayPal founders are now backing Stripe | Payments 2.0 | Scoop.it

It has taken more than a decade, but PayPal -- the coaster of the Internet that has had a downhill ride with the wind at its back pretty much since acquisition -- is finally under serious threat....

Comment:  I sent quite an unfair tweet ;-) about this article and called it uninformed here. I was amused about how it enthuses about the new kids on the block, Square, Stripe et al., calling them "SEXY, SEXY, SEXY".

There is quite a lot at stake in payment systems and a plethora of competing solutions. It will not be easy for newcomers -- even if they raise substantial funds like Square ($140M so far, looking for another $250M) and Stripe (nearly$40M so far).

The big difference between when PayPal was launched and now, is that incumbent players are fully aware of the potential of mobile payments whereas they dismissed online payments and peer-to-peer payments at the time when PayPal was launched.
