Square price sets hearts fluttering in over-heated tech sector

Square price sets hearts fluttering in over-heated tech sector | Payments 2.0 | Scoop.it

Finextra: Is Square the canary in the coalmine for over-hyped tech startups? That's the question investors are asking after the hip poster child for the fintech revolution priced its IPO at $9 per share, giving the company a price tag of $2.66 billion, some way south of the $6 billion valuation at its last private fund raising round.

Therese Torris's insight:

Update : Love that phrase "Is Square the canary in the coalmine for over-hyped tech startups?" The answer is Yes, for me but the market disagrees and applauds the TechCrunch-style hype, and 99 cents business model (selling 1$ bills for 99 cents) dressed up as Tech innovation...

The rainmaker mystique is alive and well

Is Square the next Groupon? Maybe not since its IPO has been postponed. But Square has raised more than half a billion dollars to date. The hype is over and gives way to the reality of how tough it is to squeeze money from small merchants in an ecosystem that already bleeds them dry.
