The market research company expects close to 100 million Near Field Communication (NFC) devices, which enable mobile contactless payment, to ship worldwide by the end of this year.

Some 35 million NFC devices were shipped last year, but Forrester predicts NFC devices will remain niche next year as well despite the expected tripling of the devices this year.

However [...] critical mass, [...]  define[d] as more than 15% to 25% of the population, will not be reached for at least three to five years...

 

Therese's comment : main reason argued: lack of business model, flawed customer experience,  and last but not least: payments alone are not a compelling enough reason for consumers to make a switch to NFC.

65% of US respondents believe the following: "By 2020, most people will have embraced and fully adopted the use of smart-device swiping for purchases they make, nearly eliminating the need for cash or credit cards. People will come to trust and rely on personal hardware and software for handling monetary transactions over the Internet and in stores. Cash and credit cards will have mostly disappeared from many of the transactions that occur in advanced countries."
