As a health teacher I think it is very important for our students to be given healthy lunches.  The packaged and processed foods should be minimal, if not, eliminated and healthier natural, organic options should be incorporated.

Eating healthy is cheaper than you think.

Eating healthy is cheaper than you think. | Passion for Fitness | Scoop.it

Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) crunched the numbers and it’s official: the healthiest diets cost just $1.50 more than unhealthy diets.

While cost is an issue in when it comes to adding more fresh produce and leaner meats such as fish in your daily diet, few studies have actually evaluated how much more expensive a healthier diet might be. An analysis of 27 studies from 10 higher income countries that compared price points for healthy and less healthy diets. The price differences per serving and per 200 calories for a variety of specific foods, as well as prices per day and per 2,000 calories, which is the average daily recommended caloric intake for U.S. adults.

The results confirm that healthier fare, like fruits, veggies and fish are more expensive than unhealthy foods like processed meals and snacks and refined grains.  However, swapping out some of these less expensive, and less healthy foods, for fresher and more nutritious ones added up to only about $1.50 more per day.

The cost, convenience and accessibility of fast food outlets like McDonald's & KFC challenges healthy eating. In my neighborhood, McDonald's offers the family combo (2 Big Macs, 2 McChickens, 4 small fries, 4 small sodas) for $9.99.  KFC has rolled out its $10 Weekend Bucket that offers 10 pieces of chicken for $10.
The value of this research from HSPH is that we can teach that the cost is not an impediment to healthy eating for most Americans.  Fast food accessibility and ease of use is still something that requires education: it's easier to buy a meal at a drive through window than it is to make a salad.
Like most healthy life strategies including exercise and diet - the healthy way is not the easier way.

There’s no question about it: eating healthy 100% of the time can seem like a near impossible goal—especially if you’re not used to eating that way on a regular basis.

But along with consistent exercise, healthy eating is what’s really going to help you reach your goals. It can be the difference between finally achieving the body of your dreams and never quite getting there. Plus, it’ll make you feel better, give you more energy, and help you perform better in your workouts.

I really like the way the writers of this blog include valuable content/advice in addition to sound fitness advice.  From the article:

Boost your looksSkip long, hot showers and pot for shorter, cooler ones. Blisteringly hot water strips skin of moisture and washes away the natural protective oils. So limit showers to ten minutes and keep the water warmish.

Use olive oil to smooth your skin. It contains monounsaturated fat, which rehydrate the skin without leaving a residue. It’s also cheaper than most cosmetic oils. Smooth a couple of drops over your face, elbows, knees and the backs of your arms every evening.

I agree!
Anastasia's curator insight, April 9, 2013 2:42 PM

One of the top leading excuses to avoid exercise is that “we don’t have time” or “I’m feeling lazy right now” and so on. However, there are simple things you can do to still keep up with your physical health just as fast as ordering that greasy pizza you’d usually choose over exercise. Stretching is a simple exercise that still is considered as exercise. The fascinating thing about it is that you can do it straight in your own home. Some simple stretches that any of us can do is the pelvic tilt where you basically lie down on the ground and pull in one of your knees towards your chest. Also, another stretch is the trunk stretch. It’s accomplished by lying down on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Then you’d wrap a towel or a stretching band around your foot and pull it all the way up to the ceiling and repeat with the other leg. See? It’s as simple as that, even with materials found straight from your own very home! Doing simple stretches once in a while at some point in your day will improve not only your flexibility, but a pace closer to improving a physical aspect in your health.

A new testimonial from a mother who found a passion for fitness through biking.  After she gained pregnancy weight she found that the extra pounds left her with a lot of pain in her feet.  Feeling this and seeing pictures of herself motivated her to start working out.  It was her husband who actually introduced her to biking and she became hooked cycling 12 miles three times a week.  After doing this her joint pain began to disappear and she lost 35 pounds.  Her advice for all of you fellow bikers?  Take it one day at a time.

perhaps adding ginger to my green tea will make it more tasty....

Michael Lee's curator insight, April 9, 2013 1:47 PM

Out of the 7 of the food for fighting pain 5 are effective for myself to help me ease the pains of inflammation. Ginger, sage, (coffee), (salmon), green tea, olive oil, and cherries are all effective in helping with imflammation which is common for most track related injuries so I can keep note of these just in case. Although I do not eat fish or drink coffee, the other 5 seem more then enough to help in case I become in need for inflammation reducing foods.

Ellen Diane's comment, April 9, 2013 6:13 PM
I burn sage- (smudge stick) I don't really like the taste of green tea but I take green tea supplements w/eccg? -I love smoked salmon- I like shellfish- cherries- we would have to eat a barrel to have a really good effect- but I love them anyway. You don't drink coffee;):):) oohhhhh I love strong, black, bold coffee-thanks for responding:)
